• THIS is based on a similar article published in the Current Science magazine. The authors, Dr. Gagan Prathap and Dr. BM Gupta, had basically identified the total publication output of Indian engineering colleges from SCOPUS, the popular database for the last 10 years. While the IITs and established NITs have a decent publication record, very few private players figure in the top 60.

Jadhavpur, Anna University, CUSAT are the surprise entrants, especially CUSAT. Among the private players BITS, Pilani, VIT Vellore and PGS are the top players. Recent entrants like Nirma Institute of Technology, DA-IIT, Gandhinagar and SSN College of Engineering are also performing well in their reserach out put. In the published piece, the authors have also examined the effectiveness of the published output using citation records over a three year rolling window. But the citation index is not really correlated to the published output. For example, NIT, Calicut with 286 publications has a better citiation index than VIT, Vellore with almost double the number.

In the coming years Careers360 intends to expand this exercise including other major indexing resources like Web of Science, and Google as well, to bring out a a comprehensive research ranking. Publications determine the academic quality of institutions.

Here is a listing of the top 60:

  • @ Ravi. It is a pity that DEC is ranked lower than a few private colleges. But it is primarily because the faculty at DEC do not publish sufficiently. Unless GOI makes promotion and increments a function of faculty's reserach record you would find this secnario continue. And we must come out of this mindset that Govt is always better than private. Most of the world famous universities like Harvard, Yale and Princeton are also private.

  • @Kushagra. The rankings are based on the publications by the faculty in journals indexed by SCOPUS. It just means that VIT faculty are have published much more than NIT warangal.

  • this ranking shows that perhaps Thapar,VIT and BITS, Pilani campus are the only private colleges which may compete with top NITs and IIITs.But why has Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of Infomation and Communication Technology not been included in the top 60?
  • careers360 | Jun 03, 2010

  • @chandrakant This article is about reserach output. Please look up our ranking of engineering colleges story in the print edition. btw there is an IIT. http://www.iith.ac.in/

  • Dear Sir There is no IIT @ hyderabad, it only shows your ignorance & seriousness about this entire ranking. Will Appreciate if you can look @ mistake. What are the parameter have you taken into consideration. It has to be compreshensive research to be done on different parameter. Expection from you on this serious issues are high. When you call yourself 360 degree means cwe expect 360 degree feedback on each every parameter. Will appreciate if you can take into consideration 1 Infrastructure 2. Real research facility & amount invested for same for last 5 yrs 3.Research done, publisized & accepted 4 Industry interaction 5 Life skills development 6.cut off marks 7.admission procedure adopted to get the best student 8.% of manageemnt quota, lesser student for mgmt quota, hugher rank of institute. 9.Student feedback on Quality of faculty 10 Qualification & experience teaching faculties 11.Placement track record 12. International tie-up. (not only on paper but actual benefits under tie-up to student ) 13.Student exchange program with international colleges & so on As parent we have lot of expection from career 360 degre Regards Chandrakant Ranavare 08898019393 Chandrakant Ranavare
