THIS is based on a similar article published in the Current Science magazine. The authors, Dr. Gagan Prathap and Dr. BM Gupta, had basically identified the total publication output of Indian engineering colleges from SCOPUS, the popular database for the last 10 years. While the IITs and established NITs have a decent publication record, very few private players figure in the top 60.

Jadhavpur, Anna University, CUSAT are the surprise entrants, especially CUSAT. Among the private players BITS, Pilani, VIT Vellore and PGS are the top players. Recent entrants like Nirma Institute of Technology, DA-IIT, Gandhinagar and SSN College of Engineering are also performing well in their reserach out put. In the published piece, the authors have also examined the effectiveness of the published output using citation records over a three year rolling window. But the citation index is not really correlated to the published output. For example, NIT, Calicut with 286 publications has a better citiation index than VIT, Vellore with almost double the number.

In the coming years Careers360 intends to expand this exercise including other major indexing resources like Web of Science, and Google as well, to bring out a a comprehensive research ranking. Publications determine the academic quality of institutions.
