The oldest union federation in India is called the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC). It has ties to the Indian Communist Party. The Ministry of Labor's preliminary statistics shows that 14.2 million people were members of the AITUC in 2013. It was established on October 31, 1920, with Lala Lajpat Rai serving as its inaugural leader. It was founded in Bombay by Lala Lajpat Rai, Joseph Baptista, N. M. Joshi, Diwan Chaman Lall, and a few other individuals. It served as India's leading trade union organization up until 1945 when party lines were established for the organization of unions. It has been linked to the Communist Party of India ever since. The World Federation of Trade Unions was founded by the AITUC. Today, its institutional archives are kept in the Nehru Memorial Museum & Library's Archives in Delhi's Teen Murti House.
Associations of organized workers in a trade or profession make up trade unions. These organizations are formed to advance the rights and interests of the workers and are concerned with their economic and social welfare. Under the Trade Union Act, unions are legally recognized in India.
The oldest trade union federation in India is the All India Trade Union Congress. AITUC has been the main trade union organization in India, operating under the Indian National Congress since its founding when unions started to organize along party lines. The Communist Party of India has been politically allied with the All India Trade Union Congress since 1945. The World Federation of Trade Unions was established in the years following World War II, thanks in large part to the AITUC. Amarjeet Kaur, the general secretary, and Ramendra Kumar, the national president, both members of the Communist Party of India, are in charge of running AITUC.
To make India a communist nation.
To the greatest extent practicable, socialize and nationalize the means of production, distribution, and exchange.
To improve the working class's economic and social circumstances.
To keep an eye out for, promote, protect, and further the rights, interests, and privileges of the employees in all matters relating to their employment.
To protect and uphold the workers' rights to freedom of the press; freedom of association; freedom of assembly; right to strike; and right to work or maintenance.
The AITUC's affiliated trade unions' activities are to be coordinated;
To end any form of political or economic advantage based on race, religion, or community, to combat all forms of social oppression, to combat all forms of violence against women, and to combat workplace harassment.
The AITUC will work to advance the aforementioned goals through all ostensible, peaceful, and democratic means, including legislation, and, as a last resort, through strikes and other similar actions as the AITUC may from time to time decide.
