The university grew out of the work of Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, the great Muslim reformer and statesman who, after the 1857 Indian War of Independence, found it important for Muslims to receive education and participate in public life and government services in India. Raja Jai Kishan helped Sir Syed set up the university. Sir Syed saw the need for Muslims to learn English and Western science if the community was to maintain its social and political influence, particularly in northern India. He began laying the groundwork for establishing a Muslim university by founding schools in Moradabad (1858) and Ghazipur (1863). His aim in establishing the Scientific Society in Aligarh in 1864 was to translate Western works into Indian languages in order to prepare the community to accept Western education and inculcate a scientific temperament in Muslims. On January 7, 1877, Sir Syed founded the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College in Aligarh and modeled the college on the universities of Oxford and Cambridge, which he had attended on a trip to England. His goal was to build a university that conformed to the British educational system without jeopardizing its Islamic values. Sir Syed's son Syed Mahmood, a Cambridge graduate in, prepared a proposal for an independent university to the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental University Fund Committee on his return from England in 1872. This proposal was accepted and subsequently modified Syed Mahmood continued to work with his father to found the university. It was one of the first purely residential institutions established by the government or the public in India. In 1907 a girls' school was established. In 1920 the college became the Aligarh Muslim University. Sir Syed died on 27 March 1898 and was buried on the grounds of the University Mosque at Sir Syed Hall, AMU.
