Warangal, recognised as a heritage city by the Government of India, is located in the Indian state of Telangana. Every year, students across India come here to pursue their higher education. Before going to a place to live, it’s important to have an idea about its accommodation, food, people, transportation and other expenses so that one may plan things accordingly.
To help us on these, and tell us more about Warangal, Careers360 asked Vineeth Reddy, a second year Biotechnology student at the NIT, Warangal to share his as well as his friends’ experiences. His inputs on Warangal’s accommodation cost, food costs, expenses on transportation, popular shopping places, and food etc will be very helpful to those who are planning to go to Warangal for studies.
Warangal’s posh areas are Kazipet, Bank Colony, Bheemaram, Hanamkonda, and Girmajipet. The price of accommodation at these places are: 1BHK: Rs 8,000 - Rs 12,000, 2BHK: Rs 14,000 - Rs 18,000, 3 BHK: Rs 20,000 - Rs 35,000
The economical areas are Mulugu Road, Nayeem Nagar, Hunter Road, and Bollikunta. The price of accommodation at these places are: 1BHK: Rs 4,000 - Rs 7,000, 2BHK: Rs 7,000 - Rs 8,500, 3 BHK: Rs 10,000 - Rs 15,000

PG culture is not much prevalent in Warangal. However, I know a couple of PGs where few of my classmates live. Their monthly expenditure ranges around Rs 4,000 - Rs 5,000 for accommodation including two-times meals per day.

Most of the students who come from other states live in college hostels and get their food there itself. The number of those living independently and in PGs is very low. However, the total expenditure on food in college canteens and hostels is roughly around Rs 3,000 - Rs 4,500 per month. Those living in PGs pay a lump sum of Rs 2,000 for food, and those who cook by themselves spend around Rs 1,500 per month on groceries, vegetables etc.
Talking about food prices in restaurants, I have found that the cost of food in Warangal is relatively economical compared to other cities. For instance, a full plate of Hyderabadi biryani starts from Rs 90 while the same plate in Hyderabad starts from Rs 150. Street foods are also not too expensive.
Warangal is a small city and has no airport or metro train facilities but it has a well-connected road transportation system. Auto-rickshaw and intercity buses are the most common mode of transport here. The fare for these are relatively low. A student doesn’t spend more than 500 per month on travelling unless he is travelling very frequently.
On an average, miscellaneous expenses including weekend leisures, outing, and movies etc is roughly around Rs 1,000 - Rs 1,500.
Some of the famous tourist attractions of Warangal are - Warangal Fort, Thousand Pillar Temple, Bhadrakali Temple, Ramappa temple, Jain temple, Pakhal lake, and Laknavaram lake etc.

Some of the top educational institutions in Warangal are NIT (National Institute of Technology), KITS (Kakatiya Institute of Technology & Science), SR University, Kaloji Narayana Rao University of Health Sciences, Kakatiya Medical College, University College Of Pharmaceutical Sciences, and Jaya college Of Nursing.
People in Warangal love to shop at places like Victory Estate Shopping Complex, Warangal City Centre, Nirmala Mall, Subedari, DWCRA Bazaar, and Hanumankonda etc.
Warangal’s cuisine is not much different from other South-Indian dishes. For breakfasts, people eat idli, dosa, upma, and bonda etc. The local dishes are kakaraya pulusu, kodi kura, laskora anda, and guddu pulusu.
The street food here is not different from other places. You may find Pani-puri, samosa, jalebi, and vada pav vendors on the streets but south-Indian cuisines are the main food here.
The people of Warangal are Telugu. They are down to earth, and helpful people. At times, non-Telugu speakers may find it difficult to talk to shopkeepers and taxi drivers but a majority of people understand English and a little of Hindi. The crime rate of Warangal is very low. It is one of the safest cities for women.
Warangal has moderate climatic conditions. It has less pollution and traffic congestion when compared to other cities of Telangana. Surrounded by mountains, it is full of greenery. One may often find signal-free roads here.
