NIRF Ranking 2020 was released by the Minister of Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' on June 11 online on twitter. The E-release of the NIRF 2020 ranking was widely telecast and the minister announced the top 3 ranked institutes under each category. The NIRF India ranking 2020 is the fifth one since inception and around 5805 institutes have applied which is a 20% increase in the number of applications when compared to 2019. The NIRF ranking 2020 is announced for 9 categories where the dental rankings have been introduced for the first time. IIT Madras has topped not just the overall but also the engineering ranks. The details of the ranking of NIRK 2020 are given below -

NIRF Ranking 2020 Statistics:

A total of 5805 applications were received under various categories. About 3771 institutions (unique) had applied under “Overall”, category-specific and / or domain-specific rankings for NIRK India rankings 2020. The applications included 294 Universities, 1071 Engineering, 630 Management, 334 Pharmacy, 97 Law, 118 Medical, 48 Architecture institutions and 1659 General Degree Colleges. The number of unique applicants to NIRF 2020 rankings have increased from 3127 in 2019 to 3771 in 2020 which is 20%. The total number of applications for ranking in various categories have increased from 4873 (in 2019) to 5805 (in 2020) which makes a total increase of 644 unique institutions and 932 total applicants for this year.

As a matter of practice, 200 institutions are ranked in engineering, 100 institutions in Overall, University and College categories, 75 each in Management as well as Pharmacy, 40 in Medical and 20 each in Architecture and Law. For the first time, 30 institutions are ranked in Dental discipline.

NIRF Rankings 2020 - Highlights

  • The IITs have dominated the overall and engineering as well as architecture rankings. They have also a presence in the management rankings too.
  • Universities like JNU, BHU and IISc have retained positions albeit with changes in rankings.
  • Dental rankings have been introduced for the first time. Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences leads the list followed by Manipal College of Dental Sciences and Dr. D. Y. Patil Vidyapeeth at 2nd and 3rd ranks respectively.
  • NIRF University Rankings 2020 - Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore has topped the University rankings amongst the deemed and private universities followed by Manipal Academy of Higher Education, Manipal. These two universities are just ranked in the top 10 but also have stepped up in their rankings when compared to last year.
  • NIRF Engineering Rankings 2020 - Vellore Institute of Technology leads the private/ deemed universities in the engineering rankings with a rank of 15 followed by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham at 20th rank, Thapar Institute of Engineering & Technology at 29th and Birla Institute of Technology & Science at 30th ranks respectively.
  • NIRF Management Rankings 2020- While the IIMs and IITs have to a large extent dominated the BSchool rankings, notable private players at good positions in the rankings are XLRI at 9th rank followed by MDI at 10th. Symbiosis Institute of Business Management comes next at 22nd followed by Great Lakes Institute of Management at 23rd place

NIRF 2020 Rankings – Overall Top 10 in India

The overall rankings saw some changes. IIT Guwahati has moved up this year as has IIT Roorkee while JNU has dropped a place as compared to last year.

The rankings for the top 10 universities have a shift in the rankings. The surprise entry has been Jamia Milia Islamia at 10th place; two steps upwards from rank 12. Other changes in the list are Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore has moved from 8th position (2019) to 4th followed by Jadavpur University, Kolkata Other details are given below. The college rankings have shown changes in rankings. The bigger surprise came for PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore which moved to the top 10 from a 22nd position last year. 1. What is NIRF ranking?

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) comes under the aegis of MHRD who has set up a committee to check and award rankings to various institutes on the basis of 5 parameters in a braod mannaer. Based on these, the ranks of the institutes are announced.

2. What is the benefit of NIRF ranking?

Students can know that the ranked institutes are very good ones coming with the backing of the MHRD. These institutes have passed all the parameters and have a very good record in terms of infrastructure, faculty, research, placements etc. students can know that their education is in safe hands.

3. Which categories come under NIRF rankings?
