NIRF Ranking 2020 was released by the Minister of Human Resource Development Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' on June 11 online on twitter. The E-release of the NIRF 2020 ranking was widely telecast and the minister announced the top 3 ranked institutes under each category. The NIRF India ranking 2020 is the fifth one since inception and around 5805 institutes have applied which is a 20% increase in the number of applications when compared to 2019. The NIRF ranking 2020 is announced for 9 categories where the dental rankings have been introduced for the first time. IIT Madras has topped not just the overall but also the engineering ranks. The details of the ranking of NIRK 2020 are given below -
A total of 5805 applications were received under various categories. About 3771 institutions (unique) had applied under “Overall”, category-specific and / or domain-specific rankings for NIRK India rankings 2020. The applications included 294 Universities, 1071 Engineering, 630 Management, 334 Pharmacy, 97 Law, 118 Medical, 48 Architecture institutions and 1659 General Degree Colleges. The number of unique applicants to NIRF 2020 rankings have increased from 3127 in 2019 to 3771 in 2020 which is 20%. The total number of applications for ranking in various categories have increased from 4873 (in 2019) to 5805 (in 2020) which makes a total increase of 644 unique institutions and 932 total applicants for this year.
As a matter of practice, 200 institutions are ranked in engineering, 100 institutions in Overall, University and College categories, 75 each in Management as well as Pharmacy, 40 in Medical and 20 each in Architecture and Law. For the first time, 30 institutions are ranked in Dental discipline.
NIRF Rankings 2020 - Highlights
The overall rankings saw some changes. IIT Guwahati has moved up this year as has IIT Roorkee while JNU has dropped a place as compared to last year.

The rankings for the top 10 universities have a shift in the rankings. The surprise entry has been Jamia Milia Islamia at 10th place; two steps upwards from rank 12. Other changes in the list are Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Coimbatore has moved from 8th position (2019) to 4th followed by Jadavpur University, Kolkata Other details are given below. IIT Madras has the distinction of topping the list again as compared to 2019. IIT Delhi and Bombay have held their places while Kanpur and Kharagpur have exchanged their ranks when compared to 2019. NIT Trichy and IIT Indore have been the surprise elements this year have shot to the the top ten ranks. The management rankings have shown some changes with IIM Ahmedabad stepping up from 2nd place (2019) to top the list in 2020. IIM Bangalore has gone down a place to stand at second position. IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi have stepped up in the list as have IIM Kozhikode and IIM Indore. XLRI has dropped a place while MDI has moved to the top 10 list from the 12th place in 2019. The college rankings have shown changes in rankings. The bigger surprise came for PSGR Krishnammal College for Women, Coimbatore which moved to the top 10 from a 22nd position last year. Lady Shri Ram College for Women moved up from the 5th place while Hindu College dropped to the 3rd place as did Presidency College to 5th. While the Pharmacy list has not seen much upheaval, minor changes have been observed in terms of the rankings. NIPER Hyderabad has moved a place up as did NIPER Ahmedabad while JSS Pharmacy College. Two new institutes have made their presence in the architecture rankings of NIRF 2020. They are the Centre for Environmental Planning and Technology University and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology. The rankings have not changed for the top three institutes while the ones listed in 2019 have shown a bit of change on the downward side on account of the two institutes. NLU Jodhpur has stepped up the ladder of the NRIF rankings for law with the 5th rank this year. West Bengal National University of Juridicial Science has dropped a place while Gujarat National Law University has risen up to the 7th rank from 9th. Dental rankings have been introduced for the first time in NIRF. According to the authorities, the Dental Council of India has endorsed the idea of including the dental colleges under the purview of the NIRF rankings so that students can get the correct idea of the institutions that are ranked and are some of the top in the country offering BDS and other dental courses. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) comes under the aegis of MHRD who has set up a committee to check and award rankings to various institutes on the basis of 5 parameters in a braod mannaer. Based on these, the ranks of the institutes are announced.
Students can know that the ranked institutes are very good ones coming with the backing of the MHRD. These institutes have passed all the parameters and have a very good record in terms of infrastructure, faculty, research, placements etc. students can know that their education is in safe hands.
Till 2019, NIRF rankings were announced overall and then for engineering, management, universities, colleges, law, medicine, architecture, pharmacy. In 2020, dental rankings have been introduced for the first time. So in all 10 categories are announced including dental.
MHRD invites applications from the institutes wishing to rank themselves on the national chart. These applications are then scrutinized and the ranking allotted as per the methodology prescribed. The institutes also have to submit documents to support their applications.
Five parameters are considered - Teaching, Learning and Resources, Research and Professional Practices, Graduation Outcomes, Outreach and Inclusivity, and Perception.
