What Is It Like To Intern At A Radio Station?

The 21st century is a time of expression like never before. We use a variety of mediums to express our thoughts, feelings and also seek entertainment and information. Radio which is the oldest form of mass communication is one such medium that continues to connect well with people. While it brings you news and entertainment from around the world, it still has a local touch.

Radio Jockeys are the face, actually the voice of the radio station and the reason why people share their trust with them. If you know the art of effective communication, voice modulation, can speak endlessly and you can entertain your audience using creativity and skills, you have a solid shot at being an RJ.

You may have the gift of the gab and a remarkable voice. But, is that enough to get radio jockey jobs for freshers? Read on to know what RJ Yogesh from Radio Zindagee 90.8 has to share about his internship experience.

RJ Yogesh (Yogesh Chauhan,26), Dehradun

As a kid, I had artistic ambitions, wanting to express myself, perform and create something beautiful. I started training for classical singing but lacked patience so left it half way.

One day, as I addressed my class, my teacher and the whole class were impressed. My teacher appreciated the quality of my voice and the way I wove a story. She suggested that I should do an internship at a radio station and sharpen my skills.

As soon as I cleared class 12 in 2019, I reached out to All India Radio, Dehradun for an internship. I was asked to record a poem with them. And I did. A month later, I gave a couple of written exams and began my internship with the radio station.

It was one of the best experiences of my life. I would try to sum up my learning in five points.

1. My seniors taught me the technical aspects of operating the computer controls, mic adjustments, and the etiquette of being on-air under the guidance of my mentors. I learned minute details of diction and honed them to precision.

2. The more you know, the better you perform. I was given the 5:10 to 5:45 PM slot where I shared the latest local news, chatted with people, and played songs. I learned it is very important to understand the mood of the listeners. The choice of music you play also makes a lot of difference in garnering listeners and regulars to your show.

3. It is always better to know a couple of languages so that you can reach out to more people. Be wise in your choice of words. It is amazing to be a good communicator but you have to become better at choosing the right words. Be sensitive when you have to deliver bad news. Be decent and dignified while dealing with arrogant people on-air. Remember others are listening and it can leave a deep impact on them. It is important to remain calm and take criticism positively.

4. Being punctual is a must. You cannot report late or be absent on your show. In the radio office, it is considered very bad to take unannounced leaves. You, most probably, might have to appear during holidays as well. Being a team player helps when you need help.

5. Keep your personal life out of the radio station. Once you enter the station, you’re the performer. Whether you are battling Monday blues or celebrating a personal win, be calm, be creative, focus on your listeners, connect with your audience.

6. It will take patience to find your niche. If you are joining the radio to become famous or rich, then don’t do it. As an RJ you will touch people's hearts. Their love, respect and admiration will be your wealth.

The internship is the key to tapping the immense potential that lies dormant in order to rise under the shine of proper knowledge and skills. Starting from knowing the technicalities to executing the show, you practice almost everything during the internship. It allows you to make mistakes so that you can become a pro at problem solving when you actually start working. Some of the most interesting and challenging things to learn are the ability to mature your communication skills and handle criticism. Once you understand your strengths and weaknesses, it becomes easier to manage and master them.
