It provides training programmes, academic courses and advisory services on wildlife in the various states in India.
WII offers various full-time and short term courses. A two year master's degree in Wildlife Science and, in Heritage Conservation and Management. It also has a 10-month postgraduate diploma course in Advanced Wildlife Management and a short term, three months Certificate Course In Wildlife Management. That’s not all, for those who want to pursue research, the Institute offers a PhD programme in affiliation with the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR).

The 18th batch for Master’s in Wildlife Science course began in 2022. The course was first offered in 1987, with an objective to address the needs of wildlife conservation in a modern and developing country.
Durations: Two years
Eligibility: A bachelor's degree in science, medicine, engineering, veterinary science, agriculture, forestry, pharmacy, social science, or computer science or an equivalent degree. Students from the engineering, social science, and computer science fields need to have biology in their Higher Secondary Education Board or another equivalent board.
Seats: In the 2022 batch, 20 seats were offered.
Fees: Rs 7.12 lakh per student for the two years course.
WII provides full fellowship to few of its admirable students. Based on the performance of students, one can get a subsidised scholarship of 40 to 50 per cent in their course fee.

A two-year residential Masters in Heritage Conservation on world natural heritage management and training, which was launched in 2019 as response to the critical need for the improvement of heritage education, the WII-Category 2 Center (WII-C2C)
The curriculum is interdisciplinary in nature and includes theoretical and methodological integration of environmental science and heritage studies. Thematic workshops and field engagements with world heritage sites are major highlights of this course.
This course has only one batch till now which includes a total of seven participants.
A post-graduate diploma course in advanced wildlife management was started in the year 1977 for developing the pool of professionals with a requisite ability to manage a protected area system. This course is for working forest service officers, under the age of 45 years (can be relaxed depending on the fitness of the candidate).
Duration: 10 months
Eligibility: Candidates should have a background of forestry training with a minimum bachelor's degree in any of the natural sciences. The candidate should not be more than 45 years of age.
Seats: This course has an intake capacity of upto 20 seats with the periods of two years.

The Certificate Course in Wildlife Management is a short term certificate course which is for a period of three months. This course provides the basic knowledge and understanding about the modern concept regarding wildlife management. Along with this, it gives the insight into the relevant conservation policies legislation and their enforcement mechanism at global and local level.
Duration: 3 months
Seats: In the 2022 batch, 20 seats were offered.
Fees: This course fee is Rs. 3,87,200/- for Indian trainees and for foreign candidates needs to pay USD $7260.
Eligibility:
WII and Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), an Institute of National Importance, offers a PhD programme in Wildlife Science, where the students get their degree from AcSIR.
The number of PhD candidates decreased by almost 45 per cent from the years 2017 to 2018.
