What is the full form BADP?

The full form of BADP is the Border Area Development Programme.
This program is an initiative and a measure that is taken by the Ministry of home affairs, government of India.This programme mainly aims in the development of the inaccessible and the remote areas that are near to the International boundary. This programme is developed by Border Management in association with the Union Territories and the state government.

It was developed in the year 1993-94 and first it covered the Western state border in order to develop the Border Security Force.But after that the area of this program was developed and it covers education, health ,the ministry and many other aspects. At the time of the eighth year development programme this was further extended to eastern states along the border of Bangladesh.

Overview of BADP

  • The Border Area Development Programme was first started in 1986-87.

  • It was started so as to develop the balance between border areas of Pakistan and it includes the state Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan Gujarat, and Punjab.

  • Then it also covered the land border areas.

  • This scheme became the Centrally Sponsored Scheme in 1993-94.

  • This programme was first developed in the Western border areas so as to develop the Border Security Force but it then extended to cover many different social aspects such as health education and many others.

  • Planning of the BADP was done by the Panchayati Raj.

Coverage of BADP

  • Total of the 362 border blocks which are present along the International borders and usually are under the 111 border districts in 17 states and 2 Union Territories.

  • The different states that are included under the Border Area Development Programme includes :- Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram ,Meghalaya ,Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Sikkim.

  • Haryana, Madhya Pradesh , Chhattisgarh and also Jharkhand are some of the states of India that are not included under border areas in India. These states do not share its border and they do not lie on the coast and not international borders.

Objectives of Border Area Development Programme

  • One of the first objectives of this programme is to help in the development of the Border areas.

  • The other objective of this program is to develop the International Security along the border that is termed as a Border Security Force.

  • This scheme covers the people that live 50 km from the border areas and help in their well being.

  • This programme helps in the development of schools , Health Centers, parks and many other areas for the people that live along the border areas.

  • To help farmers to develop good skills and help to develop better management practices of agriculture is also the objective of this programme.

  • It also covers many other activities such as Border tourism and also the swachata abhiyan is also included under this program.

One of the most important aims of the Border Area Development programme is to provide all the basic services such as education and health facilities to the people living in remote areas that are near to border areas.

  • The major contribution of the Border Area Development Programme is to maintain a good environment near the Border areas in order to promote the many economic activities near the border.

  • It also helps to contribute to developing a quality life for the people that live in areas of the Border.

  • This program plays a very important role for the people that live in the areas of the major threats, such as floods, natural disasters, and landslides. The areas included under the major threat areas include areas of Jammu and Kashmir.

Rustamji is a first IPS officer who is appointed as one of the first general Border Security Force officers. He was appointed from 22 july 1965 till date 30 september 1972. From 1 September 2021 Pankaj singh ( also an IPS officer) is appointed as general director of border security force.
