What is the full form of BARC?

BARC stands for “Bhabha Atomic Research Centre”. It is the foremost and leading nuclear research centre of the country with its head office located in Trombay, Maharashtra. It is a multidisciplinary research centre with advanced research facilities, modern development technologies which includes nuclear science and related fields. The main aim of this is to research, innovate and discover applications of nuclear energy especially for power generation and utilization. It is a unit of the Department of Atomic energy and follows the rules of Research and Development that works for the benefit of the society.

Since 2019, Ajit Kumar Mohanty is the director of BARC. He joined the BARC in 1983 after completing the 26th batch of the BARC training school. BARC also researches on fuel processing, disposal of nuclear waste, etc. BARC is also responsible for smooth functioning of various nuclear reactors.

History of BARC

Dr. Homi Jahangir Bhabha is the one who brought the nuclear program's existence into India in 1945. He founded TIFR (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research) for the research in nuclear science. Later in the year 1954, AEET (Atomic Energy Establishment Trombay) came into existence that worked for the welfare of the country and expanded the use of nuclear power in various fields. Later AEET was named as Bhabha Atomic Research Centre(BARC) because of Dr.Bhabha’s contribution towards the work. At present BARC is the head of all the Research and Development Departments that conducts research in nuclear technologies and industrial development.

BARC Training Programs

BARC provides many training programs who are willing to start their career in nuclear research programs and are eagerly waiting to contribute to the India nuclear power program. Some of them are listed below.

• Orientation Course for Engineering Graduates and Post Graduates

This course consists of foundation, core and advanced along with projects in a number of fields. This course work consists of classroom lectures, hands-on practice sessions which are divided into 3 semesters and completed on 1st of August every year.

• DAE Graduate Fellowship Scheme

This scheme is mainly for M.tech or MS-engineering candidates and it was initiated in combination with eight IITs like Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, etc. This scheme is mainly for the young professionals who are willing to start their career after gaining the advanced degree.

• Dr. K. S Krishnan Research Associateship Program

This program provides the research associates to work with the Research and Development department related to the DAE mission. This program appoints the individuals for an initial term of one year and provides a program for an additional year based on their performance in the initial year.

Role of BARC in India

The main role of BARC in India is to reduce the use of carbon in nuclear power plants. It mainly focuses on the usage of renewable energy resources for research which are good and safe for the environment. As the supply of renewable sources is not continuous they cannot be used as the first source of power. Hence BARC uses a nuclear power source which is in a continuous supply and with less traces of carbon for the research and development.
