Modification of leaves refers to the changes that the leaves undergo to achieve specific functions other than the common functions. The modifications in the leaves enable the plant to adapt to its environment and therefore survive in it; such modifications vary from one plant species to another.

The modifications in leaves involve the following, which all have different functions:
Tendrils—Tendrils are modified leaves, which in climbing plants help attach the plant to supports. They contribute structural support and optimise the possibility of leaves receiving sunlight, as observed in sweet peas and cucumbers.
Spines are reduced leaves that guard against herbivores. They prevent feeding, and also reduce water loss; therefore, they are useful in arid environments. Cacti are a well-known example of plants with spiny leaves.
Modified leaves that act as storage organs for water and nutrients are thickened leaves and are normally found in plants belonging to the succulent group. This helps the plant to thrive in arid conditions. Examples include aloe vera and agave leaves.
The modified leaves which are colourful and attract pollinators are called bracts. They are brightly coloured and facilitate a significant part of the reproductive process. Colourful leaves of poinsettias are an example of bracts.
The modifications of leaves perform various crucial functions that help in the survival of the plant. They:
Provide support: Tendrils are modified leaves that form the structural framework of climbing plants; they help the plant climb more efficiently towards sunlight.
Act as defence: One of the most obvious adaptations to combat herbivores are spines, which prevent feeding from taking place and hence stop damage to the plant.
Store food: Storage leaves store water and nutrients and thus help plants survive during drought or in the absence of required nutrients.
Conclusion
The modifications of the leaves have been done in a way that they adapt to the surroundings and help the plants to survive under different conditions. They throw light on how the existence of plants has come up which is with great survival capacity and versatility.
Modified leaves that help in climbing.
They deter herbivores and reduce transpiration.
Thickened leaves that store water and nutrients.
They attract pollinators to flowers.
They enhance the chances of survival and reproduction of a plant in divergent conditions.
