Many professional organisations require professional trade-oriented applicants for the public sector units (PSUs) including the Indian army, Indian navy, CRPF, and other paramilitary forces as well as the railways, state-based PWDs, IOCL, ONGC, and many more. The same is true for private manufacturing and repair firms, who look for qualified pupils that fit their industry's criteria. Such skilled based training can be achieved at Industrial Training Institutes (ITI). A government-funded institution that provides certificate programmes in a variety of trades, with programme lengths varying from one to two years, based on the trade. For a second training programme to become an ITI teacher, candidates can enrol in the Craft Instructor Training Scheme (CITS).

The CITS is managed by the Government of India’s Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. The CITS was established to train instructors in order to develop semi-skilled and skilled labour for industry by providing them with practical knowledge. In this programme, the instructor trainees receive thorough instruction in both skills and training methodology. This helps them to be acquainted with strategies of transferring practical skills and to train skilled labour for various industries.

Currently, through the CTS, instructors receive training in 41 trades, and the training is provided by 12 private Institutes of Training of Trainers, six state government Institutes of Training of Trainers (IToT), and 32 National Skill Training Institutes (NSTI). Around 38 government Industrial Training Institutes (ITI) from different states were upgraded into government IToTs in order to perform CITS from the academic session of 2022.

CITS: Institutes At Glance

A total of 306 institutes exist across the country for the CIT Scheme. These institutes offer a variety of programmes and candidates can choose from . Such as architectural assistantship, computer operator and programming assistant, mechanic, radio and television engineer, electrician, carpentry engineer, welding engineer, confectioner and baker, cutting and sewing specialist, hair and skin care specialist and many more.

Out of a total of 14, 412 seats, only 3,793 seats are vacant across India.

Eligibility Criteria

Under the CITS programme, the eligible candidates are those who possess National Trade Certificate (NTC), National Apprentice Certificate (NAC), a Diploma or any Degree from a recognized Board of Education or equivalent. National Council of Vocational Training(NCVT) and State Council of Vocational Training (SCVT) candidates are also eligible.

As per the CIT Scheme, a variety of trades are offered in the industrial training institutes. But the highest number of institutes around the nation offer below mentioned trades.

While there are few takers for dress making and sewing, crafts such as electrician, fitter and computer software applications are taught at most institutes.

Entrance Test

Aspirants who want to get admission into these programmes have to appear for the All India Common Entrance Test (AICET) which is conducted by the Directorate General Of Training. Admission is offered through a centralised counselling process. Students can give the entrance exam at more than 40 exam centres across India.

Once the candidate successfully completes the programme, they are felicitated by the Craft Instructor Training Certificate by National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT) recognized by Government of India.

After the completion of the programme, the trainee candidates can serve as a teacher at industrial training institutes and deliver effective skill training. As a certified instructor, a candidate is qualified to deliver instruction under any short or long term skill development programme. They also serve as training coordinators for employers and compete in the area of vocational training with international training. Candidates who complete this training can also create written instructional materials (WIM) for the All India Common Entrance Test (AICET) for Vocational Training.
