Every business decision is taken carefully after debate and discussions based on what is working and what is not. These decisions can be new and innovative or can be based on learnings from its past mistakes or even the mistakes of competitors. The road to these critical decisions is not easy, and Data Analysts play a vital role in such a situation.
A Data Analyst using multiple information offers important insights into how and what is the trend that is working or not working for a business. This insight gives leaders a critical evaluation of how their products, services and brands are working.
Saurabh Kumar Singh, a data analyst working with IBM for their very important client AT&T shares his experience and knowledge of what the career entails.
“After completing MSc in Chemistry from Kirori Mal College, Delhi University, in 2018, I completed a one-year executive post graduate programme in data science from Upgrad. On completion of my course, I got a job with IBM. I am currently handling the AT&T account.

Like every multinational company, IBM has a strong work ethic and a challenging and collaborative work culture. We have a cordial and helpful boss who knows when to be a friend and when to lead the team while chasing deadlines. There are 11 members on my team and all are professionals in Data Science.
When I was hired, the world was reeling from the Covid pandemic. India was in a lockdown too and so all the onboarding processes, induction, HR formalities and weekly team meetings happened online. Last year in September was when we were called to work-from-office. Meeting all my team members in person was a delight. There are eight of us who are freshers, which gives us the opportunity to experiment and grow in the field.
Since we work onsite at the IBM Noida office, our team works in shifts. The morning shift is from 10 am to 7 pm and the night shift is from 8 pm to 5 am. In the nine hour duration, I along with four other data analysts collect relevant data that is vital for attracting new customers and retaining the existing users.
So, what do we actually do? Let me try and explain – suppose there are 100 people who are using the telecom service of AT&T and after two months, this number dips to 80. We – data analysts will look for the reason as to why the number dipped. The possible reasons for this reduction could be - the competitor companies have launched attractive telecom plans due to which these 20 users switched to other companies, the service of AT&T is not as good as compared to other telecom companies, the tariff charges of AT&T is higher than that of other telecom companies etc. Our team collects this data, analyses it and submits it to the manager who after reviewing will forward it to AT&T’s concerned team. After this, various teams will come into play to work out a solution and get those 20 or more customers back to the AT&T service.
This is in nutshell as to what my role as a data analyst is at a telecom service company. Now imagine how this role will change and keep innovating with the various sectors and industries that are hiring data analysts to help them make business decisions. Data science offers a great career opportunity and you have to work hard to excel at what you do.
