What is the full form of CASTE ?

Caste is an English word .It is derived with the help of Spanish and Portuguese word casta.The meaning of the word "casta" is race or breed". Portuguese were the one who started using the word casta in place of the word 'caste' in the modern world.

The use of the spelling of caste was founded in 1613. Caste is the form of social stratification .It is characterised by hereditary transfer of a style of life. It also includes ritual status , occupation and social interaction in a hierarchy .

Full Forms of Caste-

India is a diverse country. People belonging to different castes live here . The full form of castes is given below-

1. Gen Full Form-Gen stands for general caste.

2. SC Full Form-SC stands for scheduled caste.

3. OBC Full Form-OBC stands for other backward classes.

4. ST Full Form-ST stands for scheduled tribes.

5. EWS Full Form-EWS stands for economically weaker sections.

6. OC Full Form-OC stands for open category.

7. UR Full Form-UR stands for unreserved.

8. EBC Full Form-EBC stands for economically backward classes.

9. SBC Full Form-SBC stands for special backward classes .

India’s CASTE system-

The caste system has divided the Hindus into four main categories that are Brahmins, Kshatriyas, Vaishyas and the Shudras. Many people believe that the groups originated from Brahma who is known as the Hindu God of creation.

According to India’s CASTE system the hierarchy level is as follows-

1. Brahmins

2. Kshatriyas

3. Vaishyas

4. Shudras

5. Dalits

The Brahmins were at the top of the hierarchy , then were the kshatriyas, then vaishyas , then shudras and then dalits.

Brief details of different CASTE-

  • Brahmins - Brahmins were mainly the teachers and intellectuals and are believed to have come from Brahma's head.They were priests.They come under general category.

  • Kshatriyas - Kshatriyas were the warriors and rulers and came under general category.

  • Vaishyas - Vaishyas were the traders,merchants, craftsmen , landowners and skilled workers and their category was general.

  • Shudras - Shudras were farm workers, unskilled workers and servants.

  • Dalits - They were the untouchables . They include Street sweeper , human or animal waste remover , dead body handlers and outcasts.

Reservation of CASTE-

The castes that are included in the list of reservation groups that qualify for reservation benefits are Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Forward Caste. They can get benefits like quotas for education, specific government programmes, government jobs, and political representation, and many more. The lists of general and other Backward classes are made regardless of religion. The lists can be modified from time to time due to many factors like social, educational, and economic factors. Some backward castes are also trying their best to get OBC quota.Twenty percent of India’s population is there that belongs to the Schedule castes. This means that Indians belong to the SC group are around 24.2 billion . 15 percent reservation is given to them in the government sector.

India’s population that comprises Scheduled Tribes is 9 percent . This means that the population in India is close to 10,89 billion. 7.5% of reservation is granted to them in the government sector.

41 percent of the total population is made by the other backward castes . This results in a population of around 49.61 billion people. The percentage of reservation that is given to them in the government sector is 27%.

The remaining 30% of the population is called under the General Category. This means that it comprises around 36,300,000,000 Indians in this category.

SCs get 15% and STs get 7.5% of the positions in central government services . 27% of the positions are given to OBCs. Same percentage is also applied to the seats in schools that are set up by the central government.

Due to the latest Constitutional Amendment Bill , the percentage of reservations in government services will be around 59.5 % for the EWS category.

The percentage that is reserved for the various categories like SCs and OBCs differ from state to state. It depends on the demographics of that particular state .Like, In Arunachal Pradesh, reservations for STs are 45%, reservations for SCs are 1%, and there are no reservations for OBC because there are zero OBC people in the state. Higher rates of reservations are present in the Northeastern states for STs. Reservation for SCs is 25 percent in Himachal Pradesh . Punjab has provided 29 percent reservation for SCs . That is why Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are the two states which have higher reservations for SCs.

The Union Cabinet has approved that 10% reservation in jobs and educational institutions will be given to the candidates belonging to economically weaker Section(EWS) general category.
