The full form of CID is Crime Investigation Department, based on the Criminal Investigation Departments of the British Police Force, the Indian State Police's Crime Investigation Department (CID) is the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of investigations. It is the crime investigation area of the Indian State Police, a unit of the police department headed by the ADG (Additional Police Director General). It has its headquarters in Pune and is used in the investigation of various important specific cases assigned by the Government of India and the DGP.
It was established by the British Government in 1902 to maintain law and order in the country, with respect to the Police Commission of India. The department has its own ranks of officers who usually work in plain clothes. These officers are known as detectives or CID officers. In 1929, this department was divided into Special Branch CID, and Crime Branch CID (CB-CID). CID Crime Branch is a special branch of CID headed by an ADGP (Additional Director General of Police) and controlled by an IGP (Inspector General of Police). This division analyses all types of serious crimes and cases referred by the High Court or the State Government.

CID detectives primarily investigate felony-level crimes and provide felony investigative support to the patrol division. CID conducts a wide range of criminal investigations. Their main job is to investigate criminal cases like rape, murder, theft, robbery, etc. They collect facts, evidence for criminal cases and fraud and catch the criminals and finally present the evidence to the accused in court. These investigations may involve multiple cities and states depending on the level of criminal activity committed.
There are two ways to get into the CID. One is directly from the state police via promotion. First join police service after graduation and then you will be posted/transferred or promoted to CID wing as per your record or seniority as per preference of seniors. To become a CID officer, you must have at least two years as a uniformed officer. Then you can apply for transfer to the CID post, they will train you there. During your training you will be referred to as a Trainee Constable. The training will be 2 years, after the training you will become a full-fledged policeman.
Another option is to write the Indian Civil Services exam conducted by the Union Public Service Commission. The exam notification is published on the official website of UPSC which candidates should read to get any information. The exam consists of a written test, an interview and a physical test. In order to succeed in an interview, a person must have detailed knowledge of current events in society.
The minimum qualifications required for a candidate who wants to join the Criminal Investigation Department are given below:
Subjects required – Any Stream in Class 12th
Entrance Examination - Indian Civil Services Examination conducted by the Union Public Service Commission(UPSC).
Educational Qualification - To join CID, a candidate must have graduation in any stream from a recognized university with minimum 50 % marks.
India has many universities offering postgraduate degrees in criminology and criminal justice, which can be useful for entering the CID.

Gender – Both males and females can apply for this exam.
Minimum age - at least 20 years
Upper age limit - 27 years
Age relaxation- 5 years of age relaxation for SC/ST category students (20 - 32 years)
3 years of age relaxation for OBC category students (20-30 years)
Minimum required height- For men it is 165 cm
For women it is 150 cm
Height relaxation of 5 cm for Hills men and tribal.
In addition, the candidate must have a keen eye, excellent memory, good judgment of character and the ability to manage in a group.
