The full form of CII is ”Confederation of Indian Industry”. It was founded in 1895, and its headquarters are in New Delhi. It is a non-government and non-profit organisation. It works to create and sustain a favourable environment for industrial development in India. CII focuses on Government policy issues, increasing efficiency, competition and business strategies. It provides a platform for networking on critical issues. CII have a total of 62 offices, including eight overseas offices. It also has an institutional partnership with 350 organisations in 133 countries.
CII's journey began when all the members of five engineering firms joined hands to form EITA(Engineering and Iron Trade Association) in 1895.
In 1912, the name of EITA was changed to IEA (Indian Engineering Association). IEA exclude the traders from the membership as the name reflects creating a conflict of interest between traders.
In 1942, EAI(Engineering Association of India) was established as an affiliate of the Indian Chamber of Commerce. Because IEA was the only all-India association of the engineering industry which mainly focused on representing British firms and this led to not representing Indian firms sufficiently.
In 1974, to provide a wide range of services and to make a stronger association IEA and EAI were merged and now it is known by the name AIEI(Association of Indian Engineering Industry).
In 1986, to reflect the growth and its expansion AIEI's name was changed to CEI(Confederation of Engineering Industry).
In 1991, industrial licensing was abolished and economic reforms began to take shape. For the liberalisation of the Indian economy, the name CEI was changed to CII with effect from 1st January 1992.
