What is the full form of CITU?

CITU stands for “Centre of Indian Trade Unions." It is one of India's main Central Trade Unions and is aligned with the communist party. It was founded in 1970, and its headquarters are located in New Delhi, India. K. Hemalata is the first woman to serve as president of CITU. According to 2015 statistics, it consists of approximately 6,040,000 members. It has employees in all business areas such as pharmaceuticals, steel, coal, electricity, building, textiles, etc. It has a good presence in West Bengal and Kerala and an average presence in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

It is one of the biggest assemblies of workers in India. Its flag is red with a white hammer and sickle in the center and the letters C, I, T, U on the left side. It mainly works for the benefit of workers and satisfies all their interests. It raised its voice over many issues, such as Shiksha Sevakas, the Integrated Child Development Services scheme, and many others. It is an organization that has a close relationship with the World Federation of Trade Unions (WFTU).

Roles and Responsibilities of CITU

• CITU is responsible for making required adjustments in the policies based on the interests of the workers.

• It finds the issues of state committees and related organizations and finds the solutions for the development of workers.

• CITU conducts general council for every three years and allows decisions relating to the memberships.

• It is also able to change the present constitution if it is necessary for the development of the workers.

• It allows decisions relating to membership and labor unions.

• It also fights for the recognition of trade unions and mainly believes that equal pay for equal wages.

• It is also responsible for the right to work and against the hazards of unemployment.

• It is also responsible for protecting the democratic rights of minorities.

• CITU takes care of the workers and their families against sickness, old age and accidents.

• It also provides maternity insurances and pensions for widowed mothers and wives and their dependent children.

• CITU ensures proper vocational training.

• Additionally, it eliminates gender, religious, and caste-based discrimination among workers, including untouchability.

• It also fights for improvement of wages, reduction of working hours and improvement of the living condition of the workers.
