Qualifications of CMO

Being a CMO is a big responsibility, hence a person who is taking up that space should be qualified enough. The doctor should have a state-issued lexical license and 10+ years of clinical practice in the hospital. He/she should also have 4+ years of experience in management or executive roles, clinical risk management, and safety protocols.

Skills and Strengths of CMO

Not only qualifications as a doctor but intrapersonal skills and strengths are required to take up the responsibility of the Chief Medical Officer which includes:

• A person appointed as CMO should be able to manage and lead the staff, as well as, ensure that the certificates and licenses of the working staff are up to date. He should be able to manage the hospital funds in a resourceful manner.

• Further, he should be proficient in organizational and multitasking work as he needs to regulate the budget, funds, hospital staff, and activities of healthcare professionals. For that, he needs to be focused and an active decision-maker.

• The most significant of them is having a goal-oriented vision for designing new healthcare programs and implementing them. This will require brainstorming, communication, proactiveness, and most importantly, good intention.

Roles and Responsibilities

• The Chief Medical Officer has to report to the Deputy Chairman and Chairman of the hospital. CMO must be aware of all the relevant codes of conduct and government orders.

• They take responsibility for the general administration and maintain the discipline of the Medical Department. They are also responsible for ensuring quality healthcare, preparing budget estimation, managing funds, taking action for procurement of Medical and Surgical stores every year, and regular inspection of the dispensaries.

• The Chief Medical Officer has to accompany the Chairman whenever required. CMO also conducts training programs and makes sure that everyone in the department also attends them. He also has the authority to recruit professionals for filling up vacant posts. CMO also approves the tender for diet, laundry, biomedical waste disposal, etc.
