The College of Fisheries Central Agricultural University Lembucherra was established in 1998 which provides the fishery education in the Tripura, India. This constituent college, recognised by the ICAR, is located on a 61.36 acre campus. While the total number of students admitted to the college is 204 and the faculty list consists of 27 members, the college provides a number of programmes in fisheries science. They offer 10 courses at three levels of academic qualification in the fields of aquaculture, fish processing, and fisheries management. Being a co-educational school, it admits both male and female students and embraces the calendar approach to create a view on gender equality.
College of Fisheries Central Agricultural University Lembucherra has described featuring a number of facilities that are supposed to help students in the process of learning. It boasts of 21 functional laboratories covering 1744sqm for accommodating general, undergraduate practicals and postgraduate laboratory and research activities. The institution has placed great emphasis on the issue of technological capacity as its computer laboratory will be available for Internet and LAN facilities to enable the students in their use of computers. Remote learning is enhanced by an efficient video conferencing system as part of the instructors’ teaching aids. The college library which is planned to shift to a new building constructed soon is a big library with 6,850 books and subscribing 77 periodicals annually, out of them 43 Indian and 14 foreign journals. The hostels for students in the college are separate for boys and girls, out of which the boys’ hostel accommodates 87 students across under- graduate, post- graduate and doctoral courses while 84 girls’ hostel students.
The college of Fisheries gives the following programmes in fisheries science courses: A single undergraduate programme is offered in Bachelor of Fish and Seafood technology (B.F.Sc), seven master degree programmes (M.F.Sc) with major in aquatic animal health, fish processing technology, aquaculture and fisheries, fishery extension, of fisheries resource management, fish genetics and breeding and fisheries biotechnology and two PhD degree programmes in Fisheries Science and Aquatic Animal Health and Management. All of the programmes are full-time; There are four years B.F.Sc programme and two years M.F.Sc programmes. The total approved intake for these courses is 42 and spread out as 9 for B.F.Sc and 5 for the M.F.Sc specializations offered. Although the total enrollment in the latest year is not mentioned, the college’s total enrollment equates its intake capacity of 204 students.
Admission to the College of Fisheries is highly competitive; the Admission is determined by merit alone. For the admission in undergraduate courses, candidates are offered seats on first come first serve basis from a merit list prepared on the basis of the Common Entrance Test conducted by the concerned states. Further, 15% of the provisions of open competition approved seats in the undergraduate programmes except B.V.Sc & A.H are admission to All India Entrance Test for offenses by ICAR. For postgraduate admissions the criterion includes the marks obtained in the entrance test which are 60% weight for the entrance test and 40% weight for the performance in the qualifying degree examination. There is a negative marking in the entrance examination for which the reserved category students need to have scored least 20% marks in the entrance exam to qualify for the shortlisting process.
For admission to undergraduate, the college considers the Common University Entrance Test (CUET UG). Information regarding the college’s scholarships is unavailable, however the college is affiliated to the Central Agricultural University therefore the students may expect certain scholarships. One may also note alumni relations at the institution, although not elaborated extensively, show a rather close knit relation that exists between the student body of the past and that of the present, information and even possible opportunities that may be provided by these alumni to the current students may be valuable to tap into.
