The Department of Media and Communication studies was established in 1990 as a constituent college at Savitribai Phule Pune University and is located in the city of Pune in Maharashtra. There are courses that include various postgraduate programs and research courses in media and communication studies. The institution remains co-educational and offers several programs in media and communication studies. With the strength of 5 members in the faculty, the department offers specialised courses blending theoretical knowledge with practical skills to help students face the highly dynamic field of media and communication. 

The department has a full compliment of modern facilities for student learning and development. Its well-equipped library serves as a very valuable source of materials for academic research and study. With modern day-labs, the student is able to get practically involved in most areas of media production and communication technologies. The college has an ideal IT infrastructure supporting the course for exposing students to up-to-date digital tools and resources needed for their core curriculum. The health center with first aid facilities takes good care of the overall well-being of students.

These comprise a Master of Science (M.Sc) in Media and Communication Studies, a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil) in Media and Communication, a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in Media and Communication Studies, and a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Indian Film Studies. Though the M.Sc and M.Phil courses are full-time courses, the PGD in Indian Film Studies is online, that's going to help working professionals get through. The six-year Ph.D course is open for those wishing to pursue advanced research in the field. Interestingly, the intake capacity for PGD in Indian Film Studies is fixed at 25 students, showing that the department is successful in providing this niche area under specialised education.

Admissions are also carried out differently to the various programs in the Department of Media and Communication Studies. Admissions to the M.Sc in Media and Communication Studies are based on entrance examination usually held in June.
