Government Arts College for Women, Salem (GACWS) was set up in the year 1979 at Salem of Tamil Nadu of India. This affiliated college NAAC approved offers 49 courses under nine degree program. Occupying a campus of 14.71 acres, GACW has a total population of 3,383 students with students being entirely female. The faculty of this college has 48 members only and offering education in each stream to the students.

The Government Arts College for Women has endeavoured to make available adequate learning facilities in order to improve the standard of learning among learners. GACW has a well stocked computerised library with photocopying and printing facilities for photocopying and printing students’ reading materials as well as other resources. The campus has equipped facility for practical learning in science fields through well-equipped laboratories. In physical aspect, through sports, the college provides all the necessary facilities that students may need. The infrastructure in IT is well developed to meet demands of the digital education that is growing. The kitchen is designed to support the food requirements of learners and members of staff. Among them the hostel for girls constructed at a cost of Rs. 2.25 crore for the first year students since preference is given to students from distant areas.

These undergraduate courses is available in disciplines in the fields of Tamil, English, History, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science, Microbiology, Botany and Statistics. In the post graduation level, student can specialise in the subjects like Physics, Microbiology, Tamil, English, History, commerce, mathematics, Chemistry and computer science. The college also provides M.Phil and Ph.D. in several fields in full time as well as in part time basis. In general admission, GACW admits 2970 students, of which 2921 are under graduate and 462 are post graduate students.

Admission policy for the Government Arts College for Women – Salem also formulated, which gives importance to the merit as the criteria for admission. For undergraduate program students must pass their 12th standard or its equivalent examination from a recognized board. It is mostly dependent on the scores achieved in the qualifying test. For postgraduate courses the candidate must have a relevant bachelors degree for him/ her to be considered. The entrance examination for the Ph.D. admissions is normally accompanied by an interview. Based on the governmental policy, the college offers a reservation policy to provide a chance to students from different categories. GACW also offer scholarships where 2,487 undergraduates and 419 postgraduates benefited from reimbursement of fees in academic year 2022.
