Government College for Women, Nawakadal: Admission, Courses, Fees, Placements

The present study focuses on the Government College for Women, Nawakadal (GCWN) which is one of the premier institution situated at Srinagar in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This affiliated college was set up in 1961 which means this institution has been training generations for more than six decades. Depending on its relatively small area of 2.25 acres, GCWN provides 37 courses. Student enrolment of the college is 1,748 and the college has a total number of 40 faculty members. GCWN proudly claims the NAAC accreditation showing its approach to offer quality education. As a women college it majors in women’s education addressing the needs of women in education especially female students.

Most of the amenities make GCWN well equipped to meet the needs of the students throughout their stay in the school. A key facility is the college library; In the library, a total of 58000 resources such as textbooks references, journals, and digitised forms of media in 25 fields are stocked. Lovers of health & fitness can take advantage of a modern gym & sports equipment. The college also focuses on technology where IT is very well developed with Wi-Fi connectivity throughout the college campus. Besides, there is a seating capacity of 250 in the large hall, which is designed for holding numerous events and seminars. Government College for Women, also has smart classes, laboratories and has a health centre which has first aid services on the campus. To ensure that students are not inconvenienced the college has the facility of canteen transport and the college even offers a girls hostel to students who may need it.

The variety and the amount of academic courses at GCWN are quite diverse; The course available in this college are distributed among arts, sciences, commerce and professional-MA Music, M.Com, BA Hindi Major and MBA etc., so the college can meet the interests of different students. According to the data obtained from the college in the academic year 2022 the total number of students’ registration was 1869 of which 1661 were undergraduate students and 208 post graduate. Surprisingly, while the undergraduate programme are only open to women, the postgraduate courses are had 41% male and 59 % female students.

GCWN’s admission procedures are friendly, equal opportunities base coupled with merit basis. The general admission procedures for different courses are not described, but the college probably takes into account performance in qualifying exams. Accessibility of the institution is also well captured in the scholarship offered by the institution, where 12 out of 208 postgraduate students were given scholarship in 2022. This support system insures that any deserving candidate can afford to studying in any institution of their choice regardless of the economic position of the family.
