Government Dental College and Hospital, is one of the oldest dental College of Punjab, situated at Patiala was established in 1956. The affiliated college under Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences and approved by the Dental Council of India (DCI), has been determining the future of dental education for more than six decades. Located on a rather small 1.61 acre land the college provides varieties of dental programmes to all those interested in entering the dental field or enhancing their professional skills. The institution provides quality education and practical training for its student since it has faculty strength of 14 qualified and experienced educators who are capable of delivering quality education. Here also lies several amenities that could help the improvement of the overall educational environment of the college’s students. The college has a health centre where first aid facilities are available for use by the college members. The library, which is rightly considered as a store house of knowledge possesses a collection of more than 3376 books and 4612 journals. It also pays for five newspapers and seven general magazines so the students are provided with lots of information at their disposal. In addition, the library is stretching even further by providing book bank facility for SC students with free Xerox and internet also. The specialty college has adopted the modern approach to education, as it demonstrated in its infrastructure in the IT department. Further, the institution has department-based laboratories which prepares the students for the dental study which is an essential aspect for one to undertake.
Thus, the Government Dental College and Hospital, Patiala has in total five courses for the trainings and all of them are full time. The college currently offers one undergraduate programme namely Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) and four post graduate programmes in almost all the major dental specialties. The total approved intake of all the courses is 59. BDS is the basic course of dental education and this course has the highest intake capacity of 50 seats. MDS offered at the postgraduate level in the college include Periodontics, Prosthodontics and Crown and Bridge, Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics and Paedodontics which is limited in intake to provide quality educational service.
Under the Government Dental College and Hospital, Patiala, admission procedure is very much alike other dental colleges; they accept the students on merit basis and have a planned admission procedure. In regard to the BDS programme, eligibility is offered after passing the common National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) examination for dental and medical colleges. The following are the guidelines for admission to MDS programmes NEET MDS examination and admissions for postgraduate programmes. These standardised tests guarantee that the right candidates carve a place in the college flagship programmes. The procedures for admission to the college follow the admission calendar of the particular examination boards of the country and prospective students are encouraged to check the calendar often for dates and deadlines or visit the official college website. Although specific scholarship information is not feasible, the college procures a book bank especially for the SC students as a demonstration of its willingness to foster for students of all classes. It will probably have different facilities for scholarships for credit to its students, depending on each student’s needs; however, this is information would have to be verified at the college.
