The Government Law College affiliated to Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University was started during the year 1974 and located in the midst of the temple city – Madurai. The affiliated college at Kallakulam, Madurai was established and been nurturing legal brains for almost half a century. The course has been approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and is delivered on its 4.3-acres of space in Noida. Till date, the college has enrolled 1,449 students and has a faculty of 19; hence the college provides a small and close-nit environment necessary for law learning. The offered courses are three, namely the degrees in law: an undergraduate programme and a postgraduate programme aimed at different ambitions in the sphere of law.
The Government Law College has a number of infrastructure facilities that are intended to support learner’s experiences. A well-equipped library serves as the intellectual hub, housing an extensive collection of legal texts, journals, and reference materials across four sections: Reference section, lending section, book bank and M.L Section. To address the needs of students most of whom come from other states, the college has provided for accommodation through hostel in both male and female categories. The men’s hostel is strategically situated across the Mattuthavani Bus Stand and women’s hostel is beside the Sree Meenakshi Government College. Also, the college has facilities such as up to date computerised laboratory and a hall for events and lectures to create the best atmosphere for learning.
Government Law College, Madurai only offers a limited number of programmes regarding the three complete courses offered for the students focusing on law education. They are a 5 year integrated course known as the BA LLB, 3 year course referred to as the LLB and a full time LLM in Property Law. These courses are designed to result in a general understanding of the law and its application to different sectors which gives anyone enrolled a proper setting to achieve success in the legal profession. Although, the number of seats for each programme has been mentioned clearly but, the total number of students that can be taken in a year by the college is 1449 which explain the great chance for law students. Core activities of the institution are pointed primarily toward legal education comprising courses that combine theory with practice, a crucial aspect of the legal practice.
The admission procedures at Government Law College, Madurai are basically through counselling, which selects students from merit. The candidates for the 5 year programme of BA LLB are admitted after the successful counselling and qualifying exam is taken by the candidates. Like the 5 year integrated LLB course, there is merit basis of admission for the 3-year LLB course but with consideration to the academic record of the candidates. As much as information on scholarships is lacking, the college being a government established one raises hopes of various government assisted financial encouragement types.
