Government Polytechnic for Women, Jammu was setup in the year of 1988 in Lower Shiv Nagar near AG’s office, Jammu. This affiliated college approved by the AICTE is delivering various kinds of diploma courses focusing women employment in technical sectors. With a 7.36 acre campus area, the institute has a total student enrolment capacity of 148 students and a faculty of 16 members. To accomplish its mission of delivering the best technical education, the polytechnic has six diploma programmes, all of which are developed to establish skilled employees within the competitive market by offering them with vocational and modern knowledge.
Government Polytechnic for Women boasted of having fully equipped facilities that makes the learning of the students effective. The college library is large containing a number of books of different disciplines ranging from basic sciences to technical specialisation fields. Periodicals, daily newspaper and weekly papers, national and local newspapers are available to students so as to keep them informed with the current happening as well as current periodical in the industry. It also has a healthy IT requirement which prepares the students for changes in technology. To support the location based learning, the institute has department-based laboratories where the students can translate the lessons that have been taught in class to real case scenarios.
At present, Government Polytechnic for Women, Jammu provides six three years full time diploma courses. These programmes are offered across the different disciplines of engineering and technology education thus offering substance for student’s careers. The total seating capacity of the institute is 180 students per academic year and each course is spread across 30 students. This has made the enrolment capacity limited so that every candidate who registers for the studying can be attended to well and be provided with quality education as required. The courses are structured to make sure that the student gets as much theoretical knowledge as skillful knowledge required in the real world. The courses offered are Diploma in Office Mangement and Computer Applications, Textile Designing, Computer Engineering, Electrical, Electronics and Communication, and Medical Lab Technology.
To accessing the various courses offered by Government Polytechnic for Women, Jammu students sit for a Common Entrance Test known as JKCET set by the Jammu & Kashmir Board of Professional Entrance Examinations (JKBOPEE). This particular test is important as it maintains an equal ground for all those who wish to pursue a course in a College. Aspiring students must pass this entrance examination to be considered for any of the diploma courses offered at the institute. The admission process at the polytechnic is hod cannot deviate from the set time by JKBOPEE, which conducts the CET in the months leading to the beginning of the academic year.
