Government Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, the oldest institution of ancient city Gwalior was established in 1854. This co-educational college has its campus established close to the Achaleshwar Temple at Lashkar, Gwalior and has been in existence since 1853. Also – as an affiliated college – it delivers a programme of specific study in Sanskrit, if one could call it study. As of this writing, the college totaled 51 students and 5 instructors, which make the school uniquely small. The institution currently offers two degree programmes: MA Acharya and BA Shastri which educations both postgraduate and undergraduate levels in Sanskrit language.
The college boasts of having a good library as a resourceful centre to students and members of the teaching fraternity. The library has 7161 books including the Vedic literature, Puranas, poetry, drama, astrology, grammar, and Shaddarshan of the six schools of Indian philosophy. However the feature that distinguishes this library from others as far as this writer is concerned is a section of old manuscript in the Sanskrit language meticulously preserved for research purposes. The library also gets one daily newspaper and two monthly magazine which helps student be up to date in any occurrence. It is this amalgam of people’s primitive sciences and technological knowledge that forms the peculiar pedagogical climate that is peculiar to prehistoric and modernist existence.
Government Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya offers two full-time courses: MA Acharya for post graduate course of two years and BA Shastri for three years for the under graduated students. These programmes are intended to offer critical information regarding the Sanskrit language, literature, and the cultures linked to it at the same time. It is not clear the number of students enroled for each course but the overall enrolment is fifty one students which means that most of the courses have small enrolment numbers which may mean that students on each course are able to cover large amount of material in a single session. Thus, the dedicated approach to the Sanskrit teaching makes the given institution suitable for those learners who are interested in advancing their knowledge basically round the Sanskrit language and its literature.
The procedure for admission at Government Sanskrit Mahavidyalaya, Gwalior is simple, however, details of the procedure is not clear. Students who wish to enroll in the MA Acharya or the BA Shastri programmes are therefore encouraged to go directly to the college of their interest to get further details on how to apply, when to apply and if it is applicable, when the entrance exams will be conducted. It is important to point out that as a government institution the college probably uses merit base system of admission, and may probably take into consideration performance in the previous qualifying tests.
