Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology was recognised in 2009 which is an affiliated college of the Panjab University, Chandigarh. This is specialised premier institute situated in the capital city of Chandigarh that proffers higher learning in the narrowest of specialisations, Forensic Science and Criminology. The institute is a relatively young centre for forensic education however, it provides postgraduate and doctoral study. The institute has 4 employees among them 4 dedicated professionals in faculty that offers an optimal learning environment for the students interested in the field of forensic science and criminal investigation. The institute has several structures targeting the improvement of learning environment to the learners. An efficient library is designed to disseminate the required knowledge as many printed and electronic materials related to the forensic field are available at the university. 

Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology also has departmental laboratories which are important for practical lessons in the forensic practices. Offering practical experience, these laboratories provide an opportunity to use practical applications after gaining basic knowledge. To make sure that the students are upright and better in their interaction, there are provided the sport, related to the physical training, facilities for the students to have the balance in their all round development. Also, the college’s alumni relations remain active in improving the relations between the current students and the job market. 

In terms of academic offerings, the Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology provides two courses, a Master of Science (M.Sc) in Forensic Science and Criminology, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) in the area of Forensic Science and Criminology. M.Sc is a two years full time programme with an approved intake capacity of 21 students that enable sufficient student-faculty interaction and emphasised training. The Ph.D programme intending to provide an advanced level education in forensic science & criminology is a full time programme spread over three years. Each programme is designed to offer extensive theoretical background information together with practical skills vital in the field of forensic science. 

The admission requirements in the Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology, for admission to the M.Sc Forensic Science and Criminology involves several factors for example academic results and the entrance examination results. In particular, the system of selection factors includes academic achievements.
