The Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management was established in the state of Haryana in Rohtak as part of Maharshi Dayanand University in 1975. The affiliated college is approved by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and imparts specialised education in hospitality and tourism management. This institute at the Rohtak university campus provides co-educational study for students pursuing undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The faculty strength in the institute is 10.

There are a number of facilities that support students in their learning at the Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management.  At the institutional level, it benefits from sports infrastructure that includes a multipurpose gymnasium, cricket stadium, synthetic athletics track, and swimming pool of international standards available at the university. Students have at their disposal modern IT infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, and a health centre for medical needs. The campus has an auditorium for events and seminars, a gym for the fitness conscious, and a cafeteria that caters to refreshments. The institute offers a wide range of courses in hotel management and tourism at different levels of education. There are 6 full-time courses that include undergraduate, postgraduate, integrated, and doctoral programmes. The undergraduate programmes in BHMCT and BTTM have a duration of 4 years and an intake of 60 students each. At the postgraduate level, the institute offers 2-year Master of Hotel Management and Catering Technology with 60 seats and 2-year Master of Tourism and Travel Management with 40 seats. Moreover, there is an integrated MHMCT course of 5-year duration with 30 seats providing holistic hospitality education in hospitality management. The institute also offers Ph.D. in Hotel and Tourism Management for research enthusiasts.  

Candidates at the Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management are admitted mainly on the basis of academic merit. Candidates for undergraduate programmes like BHMCT and BTTM, and postgraduate programmes like MHMCT and MTTM are admitted on the basis of performance in the qualifying examinations. This institute follows a very simple approach wherein the students' academic records are considered for eligibility.
