Loyola College of Education, Chennai has come in to existence in the year 2007 is situated at the heart of Chennai city, Tamil Nadu which is the educational capital of South India. This mixed institution is recognised by the University of Madras and got the membership of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Having the recognition of National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE), Loyola College of Education composes quality education in the concerned field of teaching. A total intake capacity of the college is 282 while faculty members for teaching are just twenty one in number thus providing an adequate students faculty ratio for individual instructions and counselling.
Loyola College of Education is very much concerned about the basic needs of its students with emphasis on learning needs. To support the students education needs, the campus is fitted with modern facilities for the institution. The Institution provides wireless internet throughout its compound to allow easy access to any information the students may require from the internet. The library of the college is totally computerised as well as digitised centre for references and study. It also has a book bank facility for children coming from the less privileged economically backgrounds in society. For purposes of practice, the college provides well equipped laboratories such as the Psychology Laboratory, Methods Lab, Science laboratory and an Education Technology Laboratory. Through these facilities, students can be able to practice what they learn in their line of specialty.
The college in consideration only has one primary core programme today – Bachelor of Education (B. Ed) Course. This course is a two-year full-time course with an approved annual student intake of one hundred students. The B.Ed programme offered at Loyola College of Education will therefore produce professional and innovative teachers equipped to face a heat of the classroom. As much as we have seen that different countries offer different combinations of specialisation areas in their teacher education programmes, this course curriculum captures almost all areas of teacher education including aspects of pedagogy, educational psychology and methodologies.
Loyola College of Education follows a completely merit admission system based on the marks in the qualifying examination. The Jesuit Management may also use other methods of selection at their policy for the purposes of weeding out undesirables in the society. Loyola College of Education offer several amenities in a bid to develop the students fully. The school has two different hostels for boys and girls for the out station students. The college has a large hall for cultural programmes and seminars and a vast play field for the students for other extra curricular activity and annual sports day. The college also has a health centre where some first aid facilities for students are provided to promote their welfare. Besides, the institution has a canteen where students can purchase their meals and a shop where they can buy stationery and photocopying services as well as transport means for commuting students.
