Maharshi Vashishtha Autonomous State Medical College Basti is also known as Government Medical College (GMC) Basti. GMC Basti is an autonomous government institution in Uttar Pradesh which aims to provide quality and practical knowledge in the field of Medical Science. The Government Medical College Basti offers an MBBS programme of five and a half years.

The college has a yearly intake of 100 UG students through the NEET entrance examination, conducted by the NTA. Qualified candidates must meet the cutoff of MVASMC Basti and participate in the counselling rounds. The Director General of Medical Education (DGME), Uttar Pradesh conducts the NEET-UG counselling rounds to allot 85% of the total seats. The rest of 15% seats are allotted through the counselling conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC).
