About NIO Dona Paula

National Institute of oceanography also known as NIODPA was a premier research establishment established at Donapaula – Goa India. The scientific organisation which is currently known as NIO was founded almost half a century ago in the year 1966. As an affiliated college of unreasonable university, it specialised in doctoral programme in different marine sciences. It has a team of 16 well qualified and highly talented professional faculties which provide individual attentions to every students. In compliance with its mission of developing ocean sciences, NIO offers four Ph.D. programmes all of which are essential to the pursuit of the institution’s vision.

National Institute of oceanography  boasts of well-equipped research and learning centres that ensure students engage in up to date research. The institute possesses a central library containing 15,000 books and 20,000 back volumes of research journals, thus qualifying as the facility of national importance in storing the Ocean Sciences literature. The company also boasts an IT compatible level with twelve full size server racks and two network racks from two Giant Uninterruptible Power Systems of sixty kilovolt amperes each. There is state of the art analytical instruments for the institute’s laboratories which include spectroscopy instruments, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), X-ray based analysers, mass spectrometry, chromatography and organic elemental analysers all of which meet different demands of various scientific fields.

Today, NIO Dona Paula has four full-time Ph.D. programmes, which take six years for completion. These programmes are Ph.D. in Oceanography, Ph.D. in Ocean Engineering, Ph.D. in Marine Instrumentation and Ph.D. in Marine Archaeology. Former intake numbers of those programmes are unknown but such programmes ensure that like-minded research minded individuals are attracted to the sector in marine sciences. Attention to doctoral studies reflects the institute’s desire to develop high academic research activities, as well as prepare world-class Oceanography and related specialities experts.

NIO Dona Paula is an elite school, and the admission policies are done once a year. CSIR-NIO interviews candidate for its doctoral programme on annual basis, mainly in June and July for enrolment in the AcSIR doctoral classes starting in August. Such selection procedures help to achieve high standards in the programmes’ enrolment by admitting only serious and hopeless workaholic kinds of students who possess the capability to work under pressure and perform exceptionally well. It is unspecified to bother details about the examinations, but the candidate may be tested on his or her academic achievements, research capability as well as the interview session
