The Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History (SACON) Coimbatore is a premier and pioneering Research Organisation in India, specialising in birds and natural history. Affiliated college was established in the same year 1990 and it is located at Anaikatty, Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu comprisingly in a prevalently picturesque area. Sitting on a total area of 55 acres, South Asia Centre for Ornithology & Conservation is contextualised to foster vibrant learning for students interested in the study of birds and wildlife conservation. Currently, the faculty member of the institute is 17, which ensures there is enough attention dedicated to the students, as well as high quality of their teachings. SACON currently has three postgraduate and research programmes in the areas of avian science and related disciplines.
These include several facilities in order to support the academic and research activities of Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology and Natural History. The institute maintains a rich library facility that is well indexed with facility for ornithologcal and natural history with opportunities of use to oneself for faculties, scientists, research scholars, environment al enthusiasts etc from different parts of the country. The campus has well-equipped developed laboratories, which includes the main central laboratory under environment section, landscape ecology division which is using GIS and remote sensing data for ecological analysis. Several learning advantages are enjoyed by students at the University, such as wireless Internet connections covering offices’ areas, hostels, and other communal facilities. Recreational facilities include indoor and outdoor sports wherein volleyball, basketball and cricket facilities are available. Sports facility is also exist there includes a mini gym for people who are interested in fitness. SACION offers accommodation to it’s students in particular hostels for boys and girls respectively in order to facilitate them during their stay.
The institute currently has three full-time programmes at the postgraduate and research-taught levels. These are a doctor of philosophy in ornithology and natural history, a Master of Philosophy in ornithology and natural history, and a master of science in ornithology and conservation biology. All the programmes are accredited with the purpose of offering intensive teaching on the subject and professional practice of ornithology and other associated areas in natural history and conservation.
The admission procedure of the SACON is designed in such a manner that a genuine and competent candidate passionate as well as inclined towards ornithology and natural history is selected aptly. Because the institute offers programmes only in specific disciplines, competition should be high and students will need to pass a rigorous exam checked their academic records and a research proposal. Unlike most law schools, SACON has a peculiar set of programmes, which it offers students, and a host of them hail from different states across the country, which makes the learning atmosphere quite rich.
Being sited in Anaikatty, SACON is well endowed with habitats that will afford excellent opportunities for field work and research in the fields of ornithology and conservation biology. Another characteristic of this institute is research/conservation that is indicated by the good facilities and well experienced Faculties. The students are afforded the possibility to undertake state of the art research or join investigations that form advancements in the understanding of ornithology and natural history conservation as the students advance in their respective programmes. Unfortunately, the list of the alumni of the institute described here is not extensive, though, undoubtedly, some of the graduates of the said institute may be noted for important achievements in the field of ornithology and avian conservation both in India and across the globe.

the institute offers m.sc course on ornithology and conservation biology
phd programmes with collaboration of bharthiar university, saurastra university, gujrat, manipal academy of higher education.

there is rare institute in india which offers bsc in ornithology, however you may do msc or phd courses in ornithology after you completed bsc course in biology related stream like zoology, botany, life sciences etc.
