The college was established in 1961. SMCE, Chennai is a private university affiliated to Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University, Chennai. The college offers courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level. SMCE, Chennai UG courses include Bachelor of Education (B.Ed). It is a two-year full-time undergraduate course approved by National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE). For SMCE, Chennai UG admissions candidates must have passed bachelor’s degree from a recognised board with at least 50% marks. 

All the courses are offered in full time mode only. SMCE, Chennai PG courses include M.Ed. SMCE, Chennai PG admissions are offered to candidates who must hold a B.Ed degree from a recognised degree.
