Vivekananda College of Law, started in 1983, is one of the most prestigious law colleges of Karnataka, located in Bangalore. This affiliated college recognised by Bar Council of India has been carving out future legal luminaries for close to four decades. The college is located in a small plot of 0.2755 acres and it caters for 591 enrolled students in a compact campus environment. The present IIST has a total faculty strength of fourteen members, who are praiseworthy dedicated educators, which makes it possible to provide a satisfactory student-teacher ratio. From the bench, desk and corporate world, Vivekananda College of Law offers three distinct professional law courses.
It owns assorted facilities that are intended to improve the learning environment as well as the personal growth of learners in the college. The library, which forms an integral part of legal education, has over 15000 books and 2000 bound volumes of different law journals. SCC, Manupatra Online, and LawSuper are some of the Web sites used in accessing electronic research materials and legal databases. It is not a heresy to begin a description of the college that has espoused skills-based learning with the group best equipped to illustrate the college’s practical leaning—the Moot Court Hall, where students practice advocacy skills regularly before some of the best legal brains in the country in mock trial sessions.
For those who need to be accommodated, the college has accommodation facilities in different hostels for boys and girls, with a total capacity of 110 boys and 53 girls. Besides, both the hostels have facilities like a mess, an aquaguard filter that has been installed in each room and hot water service through a solar heater that works round the clock. In addition, the campus has computer Internet facilities, facility for indoor and outdoor games, gymnasium, canteen facility, etc.
Listed below, we discuss the choices available to the learners and current offerings at Vivekananda College of Law. The college offers a total of three full-time law courses to its students that could be a varied choice for learners. The institute's academic portfolio includes the traditional 3-year LLB programme and two integrated 5-year programmes: BA LLB and B.Com LLB. Its four group web pages that offer course descriptions of the universities’ degree programmes indicate that these courses are intended for students of different academic preparations and career interests within the legal profession. The college is allowed to take a total of 240 students in all the programmes under this new plan, which shows that the college focuses on providing quality education through restricted admissions.
The admission procedure of Vivekananda College of Law envisages screening and admitting deservingly qualified candidates for each course. The college follows the merit selection criteria and follows a schedule as per the affiliated university. The admission of all three programmes—LLLb, BA LLB, and B.Com. LLB—is done competently by the admissions committee and presents a merit list according to the time line fixed by the university. This openness provides a fair way through which only the most deserving can get the chance to study their law at the given institution.
They produce world-class legal professionals but the social responsibility of Vivekananda College of Law is not confined to academics alone. Students are actively motivated to take part in different intercollege and university competitions to ensure the spirit of healthy rivalry prevails among the students equally, and they independently strive to do the best. Inter and intraclass sports competitions, athletic meets, and academic events are organised in which the deserving students are rewarded for their performances, thus maintaining the student’s fitness besides their academics. It also provides the students for the state and national legal aid moot court competition, of which many have won accolades for the college. The combination of academic and co-curricular learning and thus training develop the student for not only a career in the legal profession but in leadership in general.
