The syllabus

Module 1 – Introduction to Child Psychology

  • The introductory course unit begins by providing candidates with a general introduction to the concept of contemporary child psychology, including an overview of key developmental stages/areas and why it is child psychology in general must be studied, analysed and revised regularly.  
  • The importance of child psychology in general is outlined and explored.

Module 2 – The Formation of Attachments

  • In the second course module, candidates begin to explore the formation of attachments and a series of associated theoretical teachings – including analysis ofBowlby's Attachment Theory.  
  • Evolutionary theory is also introduced and discussed, along with the importance and effects of attachments during childhood.

Module 3 – Consequences of Attachment Breakdowns

  • The following course module focuses more specifically on attachment breakdowns and the respective effects/consequences on children of various ages.  
  • Along with an introduction to several different parenting styles, candidates are introduced to the basics of cognitive development in children.

Module 4 – Personality Development

  • Course content in Module 4 provides candidates with an overview of the most important stages of personality development in children, outlining how, when and why children develop unique characters.  
  • Along with an exploration ofthe theory of Erikson, candidates also discuss the development of self-awareness.

Module 5 – Social Development

  • Social development and socialisation in general enter the conversation in Module 5, which guides candidates through a series of developmental influences and factors that can positively or negatively affect the development of social skills.  
  • Course content also introduces a number of guidelines for evaluating development in accordance with age.

Module 6 – Development of Language

  • An introduction to the development of language and essential speech skills in children follows in Module 6, which focuses on communication evolution, lexical development, linguistic processes and the importance/influence of competent language and speech skills throughout childhood.  
  • Candidates also explore a series of additional age/development guidelines.

Module 7 – Moral Development

  • Bringing the course to a conclusion, Module 7 brings moral development into discussion and provides candidates with an in-depth overview of the most important key moral growth stages in childhood.  
  • Candidates explore Freud's Theory of Psychosexual Development, along with a series of additional contemporary child development theories.
