The syllabus

Module 1 - An Introduction to the Interior Design Profession

  • The introductory module provides candidates with a broad overview of the contemporary interior design industry, with specific focus on the responsibilities and duties of the professional interior designer.  
  • Along with an overview of key residential design basics, candidates investigate the development, maintenance and value of strong client-designer relations.

Module 2 - Design Elements

  • Course content in the second module focuses on design elements, introducing candidates to the concepts of Space, Colour, Patterns and Textures.  
  • Along with a dissection and exploration of each independently, how the four elements come together to create a final outcome/result is also discussed at length.

Module 3 - The Principles of Design

  • The third course modules follows with a closer look at the most important design principles the contemporary interior designer must work in accordance with.  
  • Candidates are introduced to Contrast, Balance, Scale, Proportion, Unity, Variety and Emphasis – each principle once again being explored independently and as a contributory element to an overall result.

Module 4 - Room Elements

  • A series of fundamentally-important room elements are brought into the discussion in Module 4.  
  • Candidates are guided through the specifics and importance of wall coverings and interior lighting, along with how to effectively and strategically use artwork, fixtures and furniture in general to build the desired aesthetic.

Module 5 - Working on Projects

  • Bringing the course to a conclusion, Module 5 takes candidates through the key stages involved in planning, implementing and subsequently evaluating/reviewing projects.  
  • Related subtopics introduced include identifying the needs of the client, effective sketching techniques and ultimately how to breathe life into creative visions.
