Unit 1 - Introduction to Warehouses

  • The fundamentals of effective warehouse operations are covered in the first unit, along with the various different types of warehouses and the value of efficient warehousing.
  • Candidates consider the benefits and drawbacks of public warehousing, along with the capacity for automated warehousing to drive performance improvements.

Unit 2 - Types of Warehouses

  • An introduction to the five primary classifications of warehouses follows in unit two, along with the functions, objectives and potential advantages of each respectively.
  • The challenges associated with private warehousing are also examined, along with a series of factors to consider when determining the ideal location for a new warehouse facility.

Unit 3 - Functions of Warehouses

  • The primary functions of the warehouse are examined in the third unit, alongside the concepts of semi-permanent storage and ‘information transfer’ in warehousing.
  • The importance of carrying sufficient buffer or safety stock is also examined, along with the growing popularity of the cross-docking warehousing model for retail businesses in general.

Unit 4 - Warehouse Operations & Systems

  • Centralised and decentralised warehousing operations are then outlined and explored, along with their defining characteristics, advantages and disadvantages.
  • Tips and techniques for choosing an effective warehouse storage system are discussed, along with an introduction to conveyor systems and the potential benefits of automated storage and retrieval systems.

Unit 5 - Warehouse Inventory Management

  • A broad introduction to warehouse inventory management follows in the fifth unit, which details the functions, objectives and potential benefits of effective inventory management.
  • Candidates consider the true costs of carrying stock, techniques for more effectively controlling costs and how to avoid the consequences of carrying insufficient safety stock.

Unit 6 - Warehouse Material handling

  • Bringing the course to a close, unit 6 introduces a series of material/product handling concepts and related systems.
  • Candidates consider the benefits of powered and non-powered pallet trucks, the potential for automated handling systems to improve warehousing efficiency and the primary functions of Materials Handling Systems (MHS).
