Sandia national laboratories developed a program for molecular dynamics called a large-scale atomic/molecular massively parallel simulator. LAMMPS is free and open-source software that is distributed under the terms of the GNU General Public License. It employs the Message Passing Interface for communication. In the beginning, LAMMPS was a collaborative effort between two DOE labs and three private sector labs, organised as a CRADA. The LAMMPS software makes use of neighbour lists to keep track of nearby particles in order to conserve computational resources.
