Liberal Education is a traditional approach of learning which has been revamped by National Education Policy (NEP) in 2020. Liberal Education is the multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary approach of studying more than two subjects from different disciplines. Liberal Arts is the branch that prepares students for creative thinking and strong analytical skills. Liberal Arts is not limited to specific areas of study, it encompasses a different subjects that can be studied together.

NEP 2020 of India has encouraged Liberal Education as it can provide students with the capability of thinking critically and analytically. Liberal Education is essential to enhance the ability to apply knowledge to real world issues.

About NEP 2020

NEP full form is National Education Policy, which has the vision of transforming the Indian Education System, following Indian ethos, moral. Providing quality education to all by making India the educational hub is the mission of the NEP. It is founded with five main objectives, which are Access, Equity, Quality, Affordability and Accountability. There are numerous changes that NEP 2020 has suggested at all levels of education.

Some of the suggested changes are transforming curriculum including pedagogy with 5+3+3+4 design, which covers the children in the age group 3-18 years, and the existing examination process. It also focuses on teachers’ training, and holistic approach to education. Not only the school-level education, NEP 2020 focuses on vocational and adult education, that centres on the core concepts and critical analysis of the topics.

What is Liberal Arts?

Liberal Arts is the multidisciplinary subjects ranging from different forms of arts to technology. Liberal Education generally focuses on subjects like arts, humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and mathematics. Under Liberal Education, students can learn two subjects from one stream or topics merging from two different disciplines. Few degrees that are offered with the Liberal Education are BA, BSc, BCom, BBA, BDes.

Liberal Arts teaches students how to do persuasive arguments, communicate efficiently, and solve various issues. Liberal Arts can be studied with Journalism, English, Theology, History, Public Relations and IT and Cyber Security. Liberal Education nurtures few skills in the students such as Communication Skills, Problem Solving Ability, Organising Skills, Unbiased, Patience.

History of Liberal Arts

The term Liberal Arts first appeared in the work of Greek scholar Cicero (106 B.C.-43 B.C.). According to the Merriam-Webster, the word Liberal is originated from the Latin word liber, which means ‘free or unrestricted.’ Liberal Arts is a combination of seven disciplines of secular education in the time of Renaissance and Middle Ages, although it is indexed in the late Roman antiquity.

The seven subjects of Liberal Arts are divided in two sections, quadrivium and trivium. Quadrivium consists of Geometry, Arithmetic, Astronomy and Music, whereas trivium consists of Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric.

Benefits of Liberal Education

Liberal Education helps students in gaining knowledge in various range subjects altogether and also provides them with the skills to think creatively and analytically. Liberal Education provides a broad understanding of multiple subjects along with the in-depth study of a preferred discipline.

There are 3 types of BA as of now :

Standard BA: The most common duration is 3 years, divided into six semesters.

BA Honors: Some specialized honors programs may offer a more in-depth study and last for 4 years.

Distance BA: While not as common, some distance BA programs might also have a duration of 3 to 6 years.

Presidency College in College Street, Kolkata (Presidency University) provides admission to the BA.LLB (Hons) program through an entrance test named PUBDET (Presidency University Bachelor Degree Entrance Test), which is organized by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examinations Board (WBJEEB).

2025 Admission Schedule:

  • Release of Application Form: 28th March 2025
  • Last Date for Submission of Application: 28th April 2025
  • Download of Admit Card: From 6th June 2025
  • Entrance Test (PUBDET): 21st & 22nd June 2025
  • Result Declaration: August 2025 (tentative)

How to Apply:

  • Applications are made online through the WBJEEB portal (wbjeeb.nic.in).

You have to pass 10+2 (Class 12) with at least 60% aggregate (subject to category and course-specific requirements).

Summary:

The application window was open from march28, 2025 to April 28 , 2025. The PUBDET examination is scheduled for June 21-22 , 2025. Admit cards will be available from June 6 , 2025 and results are expected in august 2025.

Presidency University Bangalore - Admissions for the BA LLB program are curently open that is 8 may, 2025 . Applicants must have completed their 12 or equivalent with a minimum of 45% aggregate marks . candidates can apply online through the university's official admission website . The university accepts scores from national level entrance exams like CLAT and LSAT-India . For CLAT , the exam was held on December 1 , 2024 with counseling registration concluding on may 29, 2025. For ;SAT , registration was open till May1 , 2025 and the exam was conducted on may 20,2025 .

It appears that you may not be eligible for admission to the undergraduate programs at the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research ( IISERs) for the academic year 2025. The eligibility criteria for the IISER aptitude test (IAT) 2025 stipulate that candidates must have completed their class 12 or equivalent examination with at least three subjects among Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics  and Physics. Since your academic background in social sciences , you do not meet this specific subject requirement.
While your impressive academic performance ,possession of a NSS certificate and domicile in a Union Territory are commendable , they do not compensate for the mandatory subject prerequisites.

As of May 2025, Sharda Jhunjhunwala Mahila College in Bhagalpur , affiliated with Tilka Manjhi Bhagalpur University (TMBU), has not released a specific online application link for Bachelors for Arts (BA) program for the 2025-29 academic session .However , TMBU has initiated the undergraduate admission process for its affiliated college , including Sharda Jhunjhunwala Mahila college.
