What is D.Sc (Doctor of Science)?

Doctor of science, commonly known as D.Sc or Sc.D is a postdoctoral degree that is awarded to a person who has contributed significantly to the science field. The authorities award this degree on the basis of the published work of the candidate, that has been produced independently. D.Sc is awarded to a candidate who earns the distinction as an authority in a particular field of research. It is awarded on the basis of published and unpublished work done independently in the form of a written thesis.

• Should have obtained a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree from a recognized University.

Candidates seeking admission into Doctor of Science are required to apply for the programme by submitting the following:

• Biodata provides details such as educational qualifications, fields of specialization, research experience, and academic distinction. A passport size photograph needs to be provided.

• Title of the thesis.

• A brief account of the recent research work. It should be of a minimum of 1000 words on a subject that is relevant to the discipline in which Dsc has been applied.

• List of publications.

• Attested copies of all the certificates in support of qualifications and experience.

It should be noted that there is the last date to submit the application form. It is released by the concerned authorities. Candidates must ensure that they submit the duly filled application form before the deadline.

Admission Process

The authorities release a list of the shortlisted candidates and issue a letter of admission for each selected candidate. Within one month of the initiation of the admission, candidates are required to register for the degree of Doctor of Science with the completed application form, all the relevant documents, and registration fees.

Submission of D.Sc Thesis

One year after the date of registration and before the completion of two years, candidates are required to submit a thesis to the registrar. The thesis should be on a particular topic and the content should be interconnected and of high quality. The topic should be related to doctoral work or an interdisciplinary area of research. Candidates must ensure that the work has not been previously used for a degree or a diploma in any university. It must be original in the sense that it opens up new fields of research.

Along with the thesis, candidates are also required to submit a declaration in a specified format certifying that the thesis is an author's original research work and has not been used previously.

Evaluation of D.Sc (Doctor of Science) Thesis

Upon successful submission of the thesis, it’s evaluation is done in two stages - screening and evaluation.

In the first stage, there is a screening panel with subject experts. A copy of the Ph.D thesis and the publications out of the thesis along with the D.Sc thesis is submitted to two examiners present at the screening panel. The examiners compare and check the thesis. Only if both of them recommend that the thesis is original, it is then be considered for the next stage that is, evaluation. In case, a thesis is found to be inappropriate, it is rejected. Many times, the thesis is recommended for revision, in such cases, candidates are required to submit the revised thesis not earlier than six months and not later than two years, from the date of communication of the report from the University.

In the second stage that is the evaluation, the thesis is referred by a board of three examiners to evaluate it. The examiners finally decide if a candidate should be awarded a degree or not.
