Edited By Ankita Sinha | Updated on Nov 01, 2024 01:09 PM IST | #M.E /M.Tech.

MTech is a highly pursued two-year postgraduate degree option for BTech/BE graduates. More than 1 lakh engineering students opt for an MTech degree after graduation every year. MTech is regarded as one of the best degrees for engineering graduates who are interested in pursuing research or teaching careers.

More than 2,600 colleges (private and public) offer admission to various branches of M.Tech programmes. Among these, around 2000 are private, whereas, the rest are public-funded institutions. Around 200 specialisations of M.tech courses are available in India in the full-time, part-time, distance, and online modes; each with its own eligibility and course structure.

GATE is the popular national-level entrance exam for MTech admission, however, there are several other state/university-level exams as well. Foreign students are also required to take the GATE exam for MTech admission. For the academic year 2022-23, a total of 990 foreign students enrolled in MTech at Indian universities.

Pursuing an MTech course after clearing the GATE exam can help students earn a degree from top institutions like IITs or NITs. BTech or other degrees with a similar focus is the main M.Tech qualification demanded by every institution. However, for admission to top institutions, it is good to have a good score in degree as MTech admission to these institutions is highly competitive.

M Tech Fees Structure

The M Tech course fees vary depending on a lot of factors, mostly on the type of engineering colleges opted by the students. The fee of M Tech ranges from Rs. 4,000 to Rs. 20 lakhs, depending on the choice of college. The M Tech fees in private colleges are generally higher than in public colleges.

The MTech fees after admission through the GATE exam are very low. These students are also provided with scholarships. Students who have enrolled via self-sponsored seats have to pay more fees. The average fee structure for M Tech is around Rs. 3.0 lakhs for the entire duration.

What is the MTech Course Duration?

MTech duration is two years duration divided into four semesters. The first year of the programme generally focuses on theoretical knowledge while the second emphasises project, thesis, and research work.

MTech courses can be studied in different modes; part-time, full-time, distance, and online. Reputed institutions like IIT Guwahati and IISc also offer online MTech degrees.

M.Tech Course Details

MTech is a master-level course offered across all states and UTs of the country to help students gain in-depth knowledge of subjects they had studied in B.Tech/BE. MTech is a degree where students can convert their degree knowledge into innovation, as its main focus is towards research work.

  • MTech uses a practice-oriented approach and includes strong research work throughout the curriculum.
  • Internships, projects, dissertations, and a thesis are important aspects of the MTech degree.
  • GATE is the primary exam for MTech admission.
  • Those who have been admitted through GATE are provided with an AICTE scholarship which is Rs. 12,400 per month for the entire duration of two years.
  • The average base salary for MTech graduates is Rs. 10.0 LPA, according to Payscale.

Top Reasons to Choose MTech

Pursuing an MTech degree after B.Tech provides ample time to gain in-depth technical knowledge on the subject and have more control over it. The following list highlights some benefits that candidates can consider while enrolling for the MTech programme.

  • Opportunities to work for various well-regarded research institutions such as BARC, DRDO, ISRO, IITs, IISc, CSIR, and RRI.
  • It opens up the door to pursue a career as an academician.
  • Top PSUs and MNCs directly recruit MTech students with valid GATE scores.
  • Non-Sponsored seats for GATE pass students by the Government of India which means low MTech course fees.
  • Opportunities to pursue Ph.D. from top universities of India as well as abroad.
  • The potential of high earning- As per the IIT Bombay M.Tech placement data of 2022-2023, 532 students participated in the campus placement process. A total number of 479 students got placed on campus with placed percentage rate of 90 per cent.

M Tech Eligibility Criteria

Each engineering institution has its own eligibility criteria for M Tech to ensure they admit the most deserving students. However, many M Tech requirements are the same among these institutions. Below, we have listed the eligibility criteria for M Tech based on their seat type.

For GATE Candidates (Non-Sponsored Seat)

Candidates who have passed the GATE entrance examination with a good score can gain admission to non-sponsored seats. This means that the MTech fees for such students will be minimal. They should follow the steps provided for MTech admission.

  • Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Technology/ or other related specialisation from a recognised university.
  • They must have scored a valid GATE score.
  • Candidates must have a minimum of 6 CGPA or 60 per cent in their bachelor's degree.
  • For reserved category candidates, the minimum mark will be 5.5 CGPA or 55 per cent.

For Sponsored Candidates

Such candidates do not receive any scholarship or stipend from the institution. Many colleges offer sponsored seats for working professionals. They need to meet the following eligibility criteria for M Tech.

  • Individuals working in an academic institution/PSU/Government organisations are considered sponsored candidates.
  • They need to have a minimum of 2 years of work experience.
  • Such candidates must be sponsored by their respective organisations.
  • They must have a valid GATE score.
  • A minimum of 60 per cent or 6 CGPA is mandatory for general category candidates. 5 per cent less for reserved category candidates.

For Self-sponsored Candidates

Students who have not appeared for the GATE examination or have low scores are considered for self-sponsored seats. These candidates have to pay more fees than others and it is generally twice the amount. They do not receive any scholarships or stipends during their MTech course.

  • These candidates have to appear for an institution-specific test and/or personal interview.
  • Their collective performance in the test, personal interview, and scorecard of degree is reviewed by the college authorities.
  • Candidates are allocated seats based on the availability of unfilled seats.

For IIT Graduates

IIT MTech eligibility criteria are different for its own graduates. IIT graduates planning to pursue an MTech degree from IITs are not required to take the GATE entrance exam. They can follow the below steps.

  • Such candidates must have a minimum of 8 CGPA in their BTech/BE degree.
  • Their applications will be reviewed by the respective institutions, and based on their academic records and seat availability, they will be considered for MTech admission.

MTech Admission Process

Most institutes offer MTech admission based on candidates' performance in the GATE examination, but many conduct their entrance exams. Some colleges also offer sponsored and self-sponsored seats for students. The MTech eligibility criteria for such seats are different as already mentioned above.

Candidates looking for admission into the M.Tech programme must know the entrance examination accepted by the institute. The admission process generally includes the following steps:

  • To appear for the entrance examination, candidates are required to fill out the application form by providing basic personal, contact, and academic details. It should be noted that a separate application form has to be submitted for each entrance examination.
  • Also, candidates must check the eligibility criteria prescribed by the authorities before filling out the application form. If any candidate fails to meet any criterion, they will not be eligible for admission.
  • All the registered candidates can appear for the respective examination. Concerned authorities issue the admit card without which no candidates are not allowed to appear for the exam.
  • The admit card contains all the important information related to the exam day such as the date and time of the examination, duration, and allotted examination centre.
  • The authorities declare the results and based on marks secured by the candidates, the merit list is prepared.
  • Shortlisted candidates are then called to participate in the counselling process.
  • Qualified candidates are required to participate in the counselling process.
  • Based on merit, availability of seats, and preferred choices, the authorities offer admission into the M.Tech programme by allotting the seats.
  • Top colleges like IITs, invite students for personal interviews as well.

Note: For sponsor and self-sponsored seats, the MTech admission procedures are different. Check the official website of the particular college for more information.
