What is Sugar Technology?
Sugar Technology is a course that is offered by a lot of institutes in our country. The students can do undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees, and also research in Sugar Technology. This subject covers theoretical and practical knowledge about techniques regarding sugar manufacturing it is processing, storing, working with the by-products of sugarcane to produce fuel, and so on.
The main objective of Sugar Technology is to teach students in a scientific way to help them learn about the subject and make them ready for their respective career fields. There are also areas to learn about the wastage of sugar, and by-products as well as reducing losses of fuel made from ethanol to reduce the production cost and increase the overall efficiency of the firm.
Eligibility Criteria (UG & PG) of Sugar Technology
Eligibility Criteria for Sugar Technology Course
The eligibility criteria to get admission to the Sugar Technology course are similar to most of the UG and PG courses. Students must have the eligibility criteria to take those state-level or all India based exams.
For Undergraduate courses in Sugar Technology
Students need to pass their 10+2 exam from a recognized board in India.
For undergraduate courses, students must have studied Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and English during their 10+2 standard. These criteria may not be the same for all the institutes.
The student must have a minimum of 50 per cent marks in their 10+2 standard on aggregate to be eligible for admission in UG course.
For Postgraduate courses in Sugar Technology
Students willing to get admission in the PG Courses (either M.Sc or Postgraduate Diploma), Must pass the undergraduate exam from a recognized university with good marks. Some institutes prefer a graduation degree in Agriculture.
Entrance Exams to Appear for Sugar Technology Courses
Like other courses, students need to qualify in a certain eligibility test to get admission into different institutes.
For Undergraduate courses in Sugar Technology
NSI Admission Test- National Sugar Institute conducts NSI admission test for all the eligible candidates. Entrance exam is conducted to screen the candidates for the various post-graduate/diploma and certificate courses in Food Science and Technology. NSI admission test is conducted in a pen-paper based mode (Offline mode) for a duration of three hours.
JEE Main (Joint Entrance Exam Main) - Just Like other engineering courses, students all over India can get admission to various institutes for the Sugar Technology through JEE Main ranking. After that, some universities may conduct personal interviews. Only IITs consider the ranking of the JEE Advanced exam.
State-level exam- There are some state exams through which students get admission in the Sugar Technology course. Rankings in such exams will allow them to select their college accordingly. State-level exams like PU-CET (Punjab University Common Entrance Test), MH CET (Maharashtra Common Entrance Test) are such entrance exams.
For Postgraduate Courses in Sugar Technology
Post Graduate Diploma Course of Associateship of National Sugar Institute (Kanpur) in Sugar Technology: Eligible Graduates may write the selection test to get admission in the institute.
Vasantdada sugar institute (Pune) the entrance exam: This institute offers PG Diploma courses in Sugar Technology and Sugar Instrumentation Technology. They also offer a Sugar Engineering Diploma. To get admission into such institutes, students need to take the admission test followed by a personal interview.
University of Mysore entrance exam for M.Sc in Sugar Technology: This institute takes eligible candidates through the evaluation of their selection test.
Gulbarga University Entrance Test: Gulbarga University also takes an entrance test to take students in the two-year M.Sc course in Sugar Technology.

Sugar Technology- Course Curriculum
UG program for Sugar Technology- The program is a 4 years long degree just like B.Tech. The curriculum is semester based and has a total of 8 semesters (2 semesters in every year and each semester has a duration of 6 months).
PG program for Sugar Technology- The duration of the PG program/ Master Degree for this course is different for the different institutes. In some institutes, M.Sc degree is 2 years long, whereas some universities make it two and a half years. PG Diploma is usually one and a half years. Both M.Sc and PG Diploma are semester based, and each semester is 6 months long.

ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY
Sugar Industry in India is the second largest agro industry and one of the largest employers. Sugar manufacturing is highly specialized and involves various biochemical processes. The science of sugar production/manufacturing comes under Sugar technology.
To excel in this field one needs to do detailed study of techniques of production of sugar and understanding of sugar chemistry, technology involved in fermentation, processing etc comes under the head sugar technology. The field also covers studies about production of different quality of sugar used for various purposes.
STUDIES IN SUGAR TECHNOLOGY
If you are looking for a brighter future in this industry then you need to have keen interest in Physics, Chemistry and Maths to pursue a course in sugar technology. Bachelor, post graduate diploma and certificate courses are available.
The minimum requirement for sugar technologists is a bachelor's degree in Sugar Technology, and those with plus two pure science are eligible to apply for the course. Research and college-level teaching positions generally require a master's or doctoral degree.
ABOUT NATIONAL SUGAR INSTITUTE:
It was the Indian Sugar Committee appointed by the Government of India in 1920 that first recommended the establishment of an all India institute for research in sugar technology. The need for a central sugar research institute was also emphasized by the Royal Commission in Agriculture in 1928 and the Tariff Board in 1930. The Institute awards Certificate, Masters and Doctoral degrees in various branches of technology and science.
