What is the full form of GAVI?

Global Alliance for Vaccine and Immunization is the full form of GAVI. Gavi, or the Vaccine Alliance, is an independent public-private partnership and multilateral finance structure aimed at increasing worldwide access to and use of vaccines, particularly among vulnerable children.

What is GAVI?

GAVI was founded in 2000 as a follow-up project to the Children's Vaccine Initiative. Since 2011, Dr Seth Berkley has served as CEO. GAVI was created as a public/private global health cooperation to enhance immunisation practice and access in disadvantaged nations. Its headquarters are in Geneva, Switzerland. GAVI works by constructing a cohesive arrangement between developing countries and donor government agencies (World Bank, UNICEF, WHO) in both developed and developing countries, from diverse scientific and technical perspectives. Its primary objective is to save children's and people's lives by increasing access to immunisation, strengthening the market structure of diverse immunisation products, and ensuring important vaccines reach the world.

Functions

• It presently supports the immunisation of over half of the world's children, providing it with the ability to negotiate better costs for the world's poorest countries and remove manufacturers' business risks.

GAVI Board

Role

GAVI has sponsored over 200 vaccine introductions in the last five years by paying a large number of vaccine costs in 73 low-income countries through a co-financing strategy. Since 2013, GAVI has collaborated closely with the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) to enhance health systems in nations to accelerate the introduction of inactivated polio vaccination (IPV). GAVI is involved in a wide range of IPV-related topics, including demand creation, supply, market shape, communications, country preparation, and so on. The majority of the 73 GAVI-qualified nations are also GPEI high-priority countries. GAVI assistance has aided India in hastening the implementation of IPV in all of its states.

Awards

• Gavi received the Lasker-Bloomberg Public Service Award in 2019 for "offering sustained access to kids immunizations around the world, saving millions of lives, and demonstrating the ability of immunisation to prevent disease."

• Carl-Erik Grimstad, a Norwegian MP, nominated Gavi for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2021.

• In 2022, Gavi was awarded the Sunhak Peace Prize for promoting vaccine equity at the forefront of COVID-19 by leading COVAX and improving overall human health by increasing vaccine access for children in vulnerable countries.
