The full form of HCM is Highest Common Multiple and it is the same as that of the HCF which means Highest Common Factor. The concept of highest common multiple is very much important as it is useful in school-level study and also in the higher level of Education. They are also useful for job purposes such as banking jobs and accountancy jobs. Highest common multiple is also known as the greatest common factor.
Highest common multiple is defined as the common factor which is highest in number and can be seen between two or more of the number. It is the greatest common number that divides all the given numbers in a quotient correctly. It is also known as the greatest common divisor.
There are three different methods to find out the highest common multiple which are listed below :
Highest common multiple by division method:
There are different steps to find out the highest common multiple with the help of the division method that is given below :
Step 1: The first step is to take the smaller number given in the quotient in the form of divisor and the larger number given in the quotient in the form of dividend.
Step 2: The next step is to perform division until you get the remainder as zero. when you get the remainder as zero the divisor is considered to be the highest common multiple.
Step3 :
If you didn't get the reminder at zero in the first step then take many other divisors until you get the remainder of zero.
Step 4:
Repeat the second and third steps until you get the remainder as zero.
For example: find HCM of 28 and 728
We will take 28 as division and 728 as dividend and will divide them until the remainder comes to be 0
Divide 728 by 28
728 ÷ 28
The remainder comes to be 56
Quotient comes to be 2
Now take 56 as dividends.
56÷14
The remainder comes to be 0
Quotient comes to be 4
Now take 56 as a dividend
As in this case by dividing with 28 the remainder comes to be 56 now taking 56 as dividend and 14 as divisor remainder comes to be 0 so 14 is the highest common multiple.
Highest Common Multiple by factorization method :
Some simple steps have to be followed to find out hcm
Step1: The first step is to write all the divisor of the numbers that are given in the question
Step 2: Now after writing all the divisors, check for the common divisor among all the numbers given. Then the highest common factor will be the hcm of the question.
For example, find the common highest multiple of 8 and 12
8 = 2, 4, 8,
12 = 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
As 12 is the highest number among all the divisors in both the given numbers so it is the highest common multiple.
Highest common multiple by the prime factorization method :
There are some different steps that we have to follow for finding out the highest common multiple by the use of the prime factorization method.
Step1: First find out the prime factors
for the numbers that are given in the question.
step2: now check out the factor which is repeating in both the numbers.
step3: As a final step multiply out all the numbers that are repeating out in both of the number multiples.
For example, find hcm of 24 and 28
As 2 is common in both the number and is repeating two times so
2×2 = 4
LCM is defined as least common multiple which means the factor which is the least value that is repeating in the multiples of all the numbers given in a question.
HCM is defined as the highest common multiple which means the factor which is the highest value that is repeating in the multiples of all the numbers given in a question.
Highest common multiple is also known as the greatest common factor.
There are many different tricks which are listed below:
The hcm can never be greater than any of the numbers provided in question.
The hcm of two prime numbers is always found to be 1
