Erling Persson began the firm in 1947 when he launched his first shop in Västers, Sweden. Hennes (Swedish for "hers") was a boutique that only offered women's apparel. In 1964, another shop opened in Norway. In 1968, Persson purchased the Stockholm hunting gear business Mauritz Widforss, adding a menswear selection to the product line and the name change to Hennes & Mauritz. In 1974, the firm was listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange. In 1976, the first shop outside of Scandinavia opened in London. According to Whois data, H&M continued to develop in Europe and began selling online in 1998, with the domain hm.com registered in 1997. The inauguration of its first US store on Fifth Avenue in New York City on March 31, 2000, marked the beginning of its development outside of Europe.
