IB Full Form - IB stands for Intelligence Bureau. It is a domestic agency performing under the Ministry of Home Affairs, which handles matters like Internal Security and Counter Intelligence. It was established in 1887 as the Central Special Branch. It was reformed at the time of independence in 1947 by the government of India.
IB is reputed as the oldest organization in the world. The Intelligence Bureau mainly deals with internal intelligence and handles threats inside the country. It also collaborates with other intelligence agencies like Indian Revenue Service (IRS) and the Indian Police Service (IPS) to provide information on suspicious activities to protect the country and its citizens from internal and external threats. Along with this, the IB was also assigned the task of Counter-Terrorism. There is a branch unit of IB, known as the Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) that works at the state level and is directed by an official of the rank of Joint Director or above.
IB was first formed by the British Indian Government in 1887, under Major General Charles McGregor to keep a watch on Russian troops deployed in Afghanistan to prevent any invasion from the northwest.
In 1909 the Indian Political Intelligence Office was appointed in England in response to revolutionary activities across India.
In 1921 it was coined as Indian Political Intelligence (IPI), which consulted with the India Office and the Government of India in contact with Scotland Yard and Military Intelligence, Section 5 (MI5)
In 1947 when India was established as an independent country, Indian Political Intelligence (IPI) was renamed as Intelligence Bureau. Since then, it has served under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
