What is the full form of IMR?

The IMR full form is the infant mortality rate. Infant mortality occurs when an infant dies before reaching its first birthday. The total number of neonatal deaths per 1,000 live births is called infant mortality. It does not only provide important data on the well-being of parents and newborns but is also an important indicator of society's overall well-being.

A low infant mortality rate means a high quality of health care, an important indicator of a country's well-being and standard of living. The infant mortality rate for a given region is the total mortality of children under the age of one divided by the number of live births per year and multiplied by 1000.

Types of infant mortality

Infant mortality can be divided into three categories depending on the duration of infant death. These types are listed below.

1. Perinatal mortality: foetus death between the 22nd week of gestation and the first week of delivery.

2. Neonatal Mortality Rate: This refers to the death of a newborn within 28 days of birth. It accounts for about 40-60% of IMR. It occurs because of the inability to provide medical care to a pregnant woman or a child after giving birth.

3. Post Neonatal Mortality: It refers to a death of an infant between the ages of 28 days and 1 year. Lack of access to proper nutrition, hygiene, and infection are the main causes of this phenomenon.

Calculation of IMR

IMR can be calculated fairly easily within an annual colony using the formula below.

Number of infant death in the colony / Number of live births in the colony x 1000

However, IMR is considered unreliable if the specified geographic area is not densely populated and has fewer than 20 infant deaths. To avoid this, either increase the georadius or calculate the IMC over several years (usually 3 to 5 years).

Causes of Infant Mortality Rate

  • The leading motive of infant mortality is delivery defects. different fundamental reasons include congenital malformations, pneumonia, and asphyxia.

  • Poor water quality, unsanitary conditions, infant malnutrition, and inadequate medical and prenatal care are among the leading causes of infant mortality.

  • Preventable reasons for little one loss of life include smoking and alcohol intake throughout pregnancy, loss of prenatal care and utilization of medicine are positive to reasons for excessive complications all through pregnancy.

  • Surprising infant death syndrome, premature and low birth weight, congenital anomalies, trauma and asphyxiation, and maternal pregnancy complications are also among the causes of infant death.

  • It results from birth defects in toddlers being born, including cleft lip & palate, mongolism, also coronary heart defects, and so forth.
