To become an IRTS officer in the Indian railway, you need to qualify for an examination conducted by UPSC civil services examination board. Now I am going to discuss how this selection process is going on.
Preliminary Examination:
The first stage of the Civil Services Examination is called Preliminary Examination. Its nature is entirely multiple choice, under which one has to choose the correct option out of 4 options given for each question.
The Civil Services Preliminary Examination is of 200 marks.
The preliminary examination consists of two papers. The first paper is on 'General Studies' (100 questions, 200 marks), while the second paper is on Civil Services Aptitude Test or 'CSAT' (80 questions, 200 marks) and is in the form of a qualifying paper. It is necessary to obtain 33% marks on the CSAT paper.
The cut-off in the preliminary exam is determined based on the paper I only, i.e. General Studies.
Main Exam :
While the preliminary exam is entirely objective, the main exam consists of descriptive-type questions with varying word limits. In these questions, the answer is not to be chosen from various options but written in your own words.
The exam is worth a total of 1750 marks, of which 1000 marks are for General Studies (4 papers of 250-250 marks), 500 for an optional subject (2 papers of 250-250 marks) and 250 for Essay.
The question papers of the main examination are published simultaneously in both English and Hindi.
Interview :
The last stage of the examination is called the Interview.
In this, it is mandatory to answer every question, and you can also be asked counter-questions on every answer. Every wrong or light answer entails 'negative marking' and what is more difficult is that unlike the first two stages of the exam, there is no fixed syllabus for it either.
A total of 275 marks have been fixed for the interview in the Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC.
The personality of the candidates is tested during the interview, in which oral questions are asked by the members of the interview board at the designated place in the Commission.
The final merit list is prepared on the basis of the sum of marks obtained in the main examination and interview.
