History of ISL

Even though football has existed in India since the 19th century with the first nationwide club competition it didn't get much popularity. There were many leagues played in India but they were not that known to people. Most people are obsessed with cricket, which did let any other game flourish properly in India. But AIFF signed a contract with Reliance which lead to the formation of ISL which got launched in the year 2013. And from there the popularity of football is increasing. The first team to be launched after that was Atlético de Kolkata. Now, two of the clubs Atlético de Kolkata and Pune City have discontinued playing and are former club.

How the Competition is Organized?

The league consists of 22 matches. Here, each of the matches follows a round-robin format means, each team plays with the other twice once at their home ground and once at their opponents home ground. Teams receive three points for a win, one point for a draw and no points for a loss. In the end 6, the table toppers are qualified for the playoffs based on the score they get.

All 6 qualifiers become eligible to play Asian Football Confederation cup. Then there are two eliminator rounds.Eliminator 1 is played between 3rd and 6th place. Eliminator 2 is played between 4th and 5th place. Semifinals are played between the winners of the eliminator rounds and the qualifying teams. The winner of the game is called as league champion.
