The full form of JNPT is Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust, also called Nhava Sheva Port or JLN Port. After Mundra Port, it is India's second largest container port, situated in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. This port is on the Arabian Sea and is accessed through Thane Creek. Its popular name is taken from the names of the nearby villages of Nhava and Sheva. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor's terminal is located at this port.
Most of India's containerized trade is handled by JNPT, located in the Maharashtra province of Navi Mumbai. It is the hub for long-distance calls to and from the developing market economy. It operated 6,017 TEUs in total exports and imports during around 33 hours, averaging 141.14 movements per hour in gross berth productivity. While serving MSC Perle, which is DP World's visionary "Nhava Sheva Gateway Terminal (NSIGT)." A self-sustained Custom House, 30 Container Freight Stations, and connections to 52 Inland Container Depots around the nation are all part of the JNPT.
The port opened its doors on May 26, 1989.
After Mundra Port, JN Port is India's second-largest port for processing containers, surpassing the milestone of 4 million TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent units) in containers continuously for the previous five years.
Five container terminals are part of JNPT. The port trust administers the Jawaharlal Nehru Port Container Terminal (JNPCT), the fifth terminal. Private companies manage the other four terminals.
The following are the four private terminals:
A joint venture between Container Corporation of India Ltd. and A P M Terminals Management B V operates the facility known as Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd (GTIPL) (Concor).
The Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal Pvt Ltd (NSICT) is operated by D P World Private Ltd, a company controlled by the government of Dubai.
D P World also manages Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal Pvt Ltd (NSIGT).
PSA International Pte Ltd. of Singapore manages Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals Private Limited (BMCT).
The BPCL-IOCL consortium-managed JNPT also features a shallow water port for general cargo and another liquid cargo terminal. Port officials said JNPT BPCL Liquid Cargo Terminal handled 1.04 million tonnes (MT) of LPG from 70 vessels during 2020–21. Compared to 0.85 million tonnes from 57 boats in 2019–20, this was 22.35 per cent greater.
To improve traffic flow and focus only on transhipment and inter-terminal train handling activities, JNPT announced in March this year that a new inter-terminal route would link the BMC Terminal with the other four terminals at the port. According to JNPT officials, the new course will cut the current 5 km in one direction of container transportation in half to 2.5 km.
JNPT manages the JNP Trust (JNPT) Container Terminal. It has three berths and a quay length of 680 metres (2,230 feet).

A group led by P & O, part of DP World, has a lease on the Nhava Sheva International Container Terminal (NSICT). It was put into service in July 2000 and had two berths along its 600-metre-long (2,000-foot) quay. It has a maximum cargo capacity of 62.15 million tonnes. The first privately run container terminal in India was NSICT. APM Terminals' third container terminal, GTI (Gateway Terminals India Pvt Ltd), which can accommodate 1.3 million TEUs, was implemented in 2006. By July 2016, a brand-new independent container terminal known as NSIGT with a 330-metre quay and a 12.5 million tonne capacity will be fully operational. Bharat Mumbai Container Terminals (PSA Mumbai), the fourth container terminal, was built and is run by PSA International. Phase 1, which has a capacity of 2.4 million TEUs per year, was finished in December 2017. By the end of Phase 2, the terminal will have a total length of 2,000 metres and a maximum capacity of 4.8 million TEUs per year.
JNP has a fully functional Custom House, 30 Container Freight Stations, and connections to 52 Inland Container Depots located throughout the nation. Ongoing initiatives include:
The Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) will enhance the current train capacity of 27 to 100 trains per day.

The development of the Port road link strengthens the hinterland connectivity by rail and road.
It is close to airports, hotels, convention centres, and the cities of Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Pune.
The port began marking cargo with logistical data in 2006. With assistance from Container Freight Stations and Logistics parks owned by public and private players, including Maharashtra State Warehousing Corporation, Avashya, Continental Warehousing, Ameya Logistics, TransIndia, Contegrate Entrepot, DRT, Gateway District Park, Allcargo, JNPT has India's best logistics connectivity. The direct port delivery model of the containers, a first-of-its-kind approach offered under the ease of doing business in India, has been attempted to be implemented by JNPT authorities.
JNPT recorded an output of 441,984 units in June 2021 compared to 289,292 units last year, showing a growth of 52.78 per cent. It was due to the easing of lockdown restrictions and the recent uptick in domestic economic activity.

With eight 13,000-TEU ships, the weekly HEX service travels from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Nhava Sheva (JNPT), King Abdullah, Gioia Tauro, Felixstowe, Hamburg, Mundra, Antwerp, Le Havre, and back.
At Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), including a weekly intra-Asia call from HMM has dramatically improved the growth forecast for PSA International's new terminal. JNPT's potential for intra-Asian commerce was further highlighted on January 2 when HMM's autonomous, six-vessel China-India Express (CIX) Service made its debut at BMCT with a call from the 8,562-TEU Hyundai Loyalty.
