Look the marks scored by you in diploma is very well sufficient to take admission in any of the engineering college.
Yes definitely you can take admission as a lateral entry in automobile engineering.There are some good colleges in private and some government.
Usually for Government colleges you might have to give exams like JEE or Comedk (in you are from Karnataka) and so on. Some good colleges in private are like SRM, MANIPAL,KIIT, VIT etc.
Automobile engineering has lot of scope in India specifically Pune ,Chennai, Hyderabad. But remember this that PSU of India do not recruit Automobile engineers, they only want mechanical engineers.

As per 2017, the cut off rank for B.E. Automobile enginnering at SRM was 55,000. Considering even the fluctuations in the cut off rank that are bound to happen in 2018, you surely will get admission for automobile engineering with 38,594.

At the graduate level, there is no Automobile Engineering branch. But if you want to pursue career in this field, then you can opt for Mechanical Engineering or Production (Sandwich) branch in which almost all the automobile related subjects are covered.
